Good Questions: DIY Reupholster of an Eames Rocker?

eamesrocker032609.jpgGreenolive writes: I have a second hand Eames rocking chair that has been upholstered with a dark and serious business wool. I'd love to reupholster it and am wondering whether I can handle it with my moderate sewing skills. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this?

Eames... lucky you! If you could get that trim off around the edges (without damaging the frame) and take a peek inside you could see if it is something you could tackle. The curve of the seat probably means that it is attached to the bottom/back of the seat inside somehow. If it looks easy to disassemble then you could easily copy the exact shapes of the green fabric to reupholster. If you doubt your sewing capabilities, you should pay a pro simply because it's Eames. Any other rocker could be worth the challenge, but it would be a shame to lose that great piece! Good luck and post the finished product if you decide to do it!

We have a blue original Eames rocker and thought about the same thing. I am too scared to go for it. Would love to see the finished product.

The curved, seamless shape is a tough one to replicate by a non-professional. If it's an original, I would leave it be.
