Good Questions: Double Wide Strollers?

2007-05-24-stroller.jpgEsperanza sent us a great question: "Do you have recommendations for double-wide strollers that aren't ginormous? I hate how big and bulky the really big ones get, but with twins it's hard to be without. Any pretty patterns are a plus, too."

Strolling with twins definitely can present more of a challenge in many ways. We like the Mountain Buggy Urban Elite pictured above. It has a narrow profile and manuevers easily. There are also options for parents including the possibility of turning one or both into a carriage.

About.com has a great article with their own top ten available here .

Anyone else have any suggestions?

I saw a stroller for twins today that I had never come across before -- it wasn't side-by-side, but rather, in a row. However, the back seat was higher than the first, so that the child in the back could see. Having the seat like that also made the stroller shorter in length, so that is was just a bit longer than a regular stroller. Haven't a clue what it was, as I was so surprised by the way the children were stashed in it, that I never got a look for an identifying brand. Pretty cool stroller! Somebody out there must know what it is...

we have twins and did a real thorough search of double strollers. for our money, the one shown is the best... especially for the city. you want large tires (easier to go up and down stairs and better on the sidewalk) and you want the high handles. the double decker ones that they have are too unwieldly (although the ability to snap your car seat in there is nice).

best solution for us, however, was to use the double stroller as little as possible in favor of putting one in a single stroller and the other in a bjorn (or bjorn-like device).

We have a number of different stroller options for our twins. When they were young (under 6 months old), we used a sling/baby bjorn and a single stroller - like joeq above talks about above.

As they have gotten older and heavier (they're 18-months old), we use the Graco Duo Glider which is narrow and collapsible with lots of under seat storage - great for errands as it fits through standard doorways.

In addition, we bought a Baby Jogger Q Series Double Jogging Stroller which we mainly use for outdoor activities as it's wider, but lighter than the Graco.

Finally, for airplane travel, we bought two $10 Cosco umbrella strollers and connectors - perhaps not so comfortable for the twins but highly efficient.

Hope that helps!

Like Sojudesigns, we have twins and have a "quiver" of strollers depending on what we're doing - 2 umbrella style (I went for the Zooper Twist - more money but comes with ALL the accessories - rain cover, UV shield, storage on bottom, shade cover, seats that adjust- made to last!). Connectors are inexpensive and can turn this system into a double We have also used one of these with the smaller baby in the bjorn, but at 14 mos. this isn't going to work much longer. In the early days, we had the double snap-n-go frame and the baby "bucket" style car seats literally snap into place. This frame is lightweight and inexpensive, and this works well when they are infants (but you're done with it the minute they have outgrown the "buckets"). This system has the babies in a row and not side by side. We have the Combi Twin Savvy for travel since it is much more compact and lightweight than a lot of double strollers. (We like have one person with a completely free set of hands.) The babies are side by side, but it's narrow for a double. It also fits in the back of the car. Make sure you test any double stroller to see if it fits - this is VERY important. (Friends had raved about the double Maclaren, but it was heavy and didn't fit the car - plus the seats didn't recline.) Lastly, we have the BOB Duallie Revolution jogging stroller. This is our workhorse stroller, and it's wonderful (but big - maybe too big if you don't have a place to park it). We also purchased the rain cover and have a mosquito net. The BOB has the best sun canopies -they operate independently, have a clear mylar section so you can peek at them (and this also can close up if the sun is overhead) , and provides more shade (or cover if it starts to rain) than any other stroller we've seen. (We purchased an add-on sunshade for the Combi). We love our BOB, and it's what we use unless we're on the go or travelling. One thing about twins - at least ours- is that regardless of the set up - they will find and interact with each other both nicely (holding hands) and then not-so-nicely (biting, reaching, stealing toys). Good luck finding stroller solutions that work for you- they are truly "double happiness" but also a tremendous amount of work (and gear).

I just bought a Valco Tri-mode double for my two kids and I love it. It's only a couple inches wider than the maclaren twins of the world, but it handles like a dream. It's an inch narrower than the mountain buggy and it has separate hoods for each seat, so I can cover up the baby and the bigger guy can see what's going on. I did a lot of research on this site, www.joggingstroller.com - it's easy to compare the different styles, and their reviews were somewhat helpful. My biggest pet peeve is that their color selection isn't great - we ended up with scarlett.

Not sure if you're near Canada (sadly it isn't sold in the US), but the First Wheels City Twin is really nice. http://www.firstwheels.nl/en/city_twin/
