Heidi sent us an email: "We are expecting our new baby in July. We are planning on getting a rocking chair. However we are having trouble making a decision. Aesthetically we love the Eames Shell Chair Rocker, but I'm concerned that it won't be comfortable for me and the baby. Has anyone else used this for nursing and holding the baby? Any other options that won't break the bank? Also the room isn't very large so we need a small to medium size chair."
Good question, Heidi!

I would love to know also, have been thinking about purchasing one for quite some time. We have our second child coming in October. We have a comfy glider now, which will go in the baby's room. However, we would still like to be able to have a chair in our 2 year old's room to read to him in and were thinking this would be good option.
I really cannot imagine nursing in this rocker though.

Heidi, I asked this questions recently on an open thread, and I got a lot of great feedback:
http://nursery.apartmenttherapy.com/nursery/open-thread/open-thread-9-022830
Although the feedback on the eames rocker was positive, I eventually decided that I wanted something padded for nursing. I have ordered the monte designs glider. Even though it was more money that I was planning to spend, I decided that, like the eames rocker, the style was something that I could incorporate into other rooms in the future. I will post an update when the glider arrives.
I'm still looking for an excuse to buy an eames rocker, though. :)

we're also looking to buy an eames rocker in preparation for our new baby's arrival in october. we've tried the chair out at DWR and it felt really comfortable to me...as for sitting in it for hours on end...well, sitting down anywhere for a long period of time eventually makes me uncomfortable. but i have confidence in the Eames rocker. i say go for it.
Heidi, if you buy this...could you post again after using it about how you feel about it?

The Eames rocker makes a great reading chair. We've been using it with my oldest since he was two (he is now four). Also, when other kids come over, they all want to sit in the rocker (my sixteen month old neice goes straight for it every time). It may not be a good chair for nursing, but you will get a lot of use out of it and it also looks great in other rooms of the house later on.

We bought our Eames rocker long before we had any kids - just because we like it, the size is manageable, and the price is right. We had twins 14 mos ago, and we used the rocker in the living room for "supplemental" rocking, but it is NOT comfortable for nursing, isn't roomy for any extra blankets, bottles (if you end up supplementing with those), etc. It's just too small (and we're not big people) and the surface is hard and unforgiving for extended periods of time. I was given a hand-me-down glider and had a new cushions made for it, and that worked out OK for us. There are usually plenty of gliders or chairs on Craigslist/garage sales that you could recover in a great fabric that might hit all your hot buttons (size, price, function). You can also have a rocking base put onto nearly any sort of chair you might like, and a good upholstery shop can help you with that. If there's a nice little upholstered chair you like, almost any sort of base can be put onto it - something else to consider. Good luck with your little one and finding a solution that works for you!

Maybe I'm just a weirdo, but I find it comfortable for nursing. The arm rests are at a perfect height for me.

I ended up *hating* nursing in a glider! Go figure. I was much more comfortable nursing on the sofa.
So please don't assume you *have* to have a glider at all. It is not a "must-have." It is not even necessarily a "nice-to-have" based on my experience.
Also: I'd avoid the Eames rocker until your kid is 2-3. Crawling hands can get pinched... as can feet when tiny ones start pulling up.

After seeing what happened to our furniture after we had our kids (now 2 and 4), I say wait! I didn't have a rocker/glider with my first child and regretted every minute of it. We bought one for our second, and although its not the prettiest thing (I may reupholster it), it is the most comfortable chair we own and it made nursing so much easier. Visitors love sitting in it! Definitely try one out. We are finally getting to a point when we can start investing in furniture more to our tastes but to the kids, that rocker-glider is their version of Archie Bunker's armchair. Worn in, oh so comfortable, and full of memories.

It took until our second child to buy something....
Back in 2003, David Netto was promising to get out a glider in 6 months, so we held off. He never issued one, and so we never bought one.
We wound up borrowing one from friends desperate to get rid of theirs (note: don't get one with flat wood arms - it kept cutting off my circulation and putting my arms to sleep!). I never nursed in the glider -- it was too uncomfortable. Everyone else I know also nursed on the sofa... (and I was thrilled to get rid of it when we moved!)
However, they are useful for soothing fussy babies...
We finally bought the Moderno Rocker for babe #2, and surprise, it is VERY comfortable for nursing! It is quite wide, and both babes snuggle in with me. The only drawback is that it doesn't have the *most* satisfying rocking motion, although it is ok.

as i said in the other thread, we have an eames rocker and it works for us.
and we now have a crawling/pulling up baby who is very interested in it. and i've noticed that its so light that she doesn't really pinch her hands or feet, because she can easily move it around. obviously though, we keep a close eye on her when she's around it.
she also likes to roll her balls and toys around in its bucket seat.

I am so exctied to answer this...I searched high an low for a cool rocker and ended up with an Ikea Poang chair with footstool (comfy, but not that unique and does not rock - just sort of bounces...I love it and it's super comfy)...anyway, this weekend I was in the bay area in an EQ3 store and discovered the COOLEST, most comfortable rocker. Check out the Matt Rocker (comes in fabric, leather, etc.) on EQ3.com. They start at $599.

We bought the eames rocker shortly before our son was born with the express purpose of using it for nursing. It was reasonably priced and fit into our modern aesthetic. I imagined adding a pillow for comfort. I never once nursed him in the rocker. It's just not comfortable enough. We live in a house in the suburbs so I ended up nusing him all over the place, the couch, the bed, the office chair, kitchen chair etc. We use the rocker as extra seating for guests and every kid that comes to our house is immediately drawn to it so it wasn't a terrible purchase. It's nice for my son to rock in now that he's almost two but it wasn't useful for nursing at all. I definitely don't regret not buying a glider but if I was buying something specifically to nurse in I would probably get the Sleepytime rocker or something similar from Nurseryworks.

BTW: I should add that our child did manage to make our Eames rocker flip backwards while rocking in it. We are much more careful now ;-)

I used our Eames rocker to nurse my daughter her first year. I would put my daughter on a Boppy (which rested on the arms of the rocker) and found that her head was just the right height for nursing. My husband also used the rocker to bottlefeed our daughter and it worked perfectly fine for him too. I did like that the chair could be easily moved from room to room. We also have a Poang chair from Ikea, which worked very well for nursing too.

ouch, yeah, no standing up in the rocker. keep arms and legs inside vehicle.

i purchased an eames rocker at a deep discount (which is really the only reason we have) when our son was 3 months old. admittedly, it isn't the most comfortable chair (i actually nursed my son quite a bit in the IKEA poang chair which i like b/c the back is much higher) but i've added a couple of pillows--one for my back and one for under my arm/his head, which help a lot. we use the chair every night to give him a bottle before bed. he likes sitting in the eames rocker, too!

If the eames chair doesn't work, I would recommend a rocker over a glider. My 8 month old and I have used a glider since he was born and it just doesn't seem to do the trick. When we are in the rocker at grandma's though, he falls right to sleep.

I should add that we've never had any problems with getting fingers caught or toes smashed. It's very light. Actually, I was watching my nine month old play around it tonight and the armshell part of it hangs over the base, so getting toes smashed by it is pretty hard to do. Also, I agree that it's nice that it's so easily moved between rooms.
