Good Questions: Fabric for Nursery Curtains

2007_06_27_sarahnursery2.jpg

Sarah's nursery is almost complete, but she's looking for fabric suggestions for curtains.

We just finished painting our nursery and I am looking for fabric for the curtains. We have a lot of color happening in the daybed, changing table and rugs. I LOVE prints but want to make sure I am not going overboard. Any suggestions?

Readers, let's get to work and help out Sarah!

In addition to the vibrant yellow walls and turquoise trim on the windows, Sarah's changing table is red and her daybed is green. She's also chosen a multi-colored potholder rug (love it!).

We also love prints and don't think Sarah needs to shy away from them. Even though she has incorporated several colors into the nursery, she should be able to find a print that will work with all of them.

One strategy is to pair prints from the same fabric line which usually ensures that the colors coordinate with each other (it can be very hard to match colors online). One print can be dominant while the other forms a border at the top, bottom or both.

Here are four that could be mixed and matched from the Katie Jump Rope line by Denyse Schmidt

Or you could try pairing the same print in different colorways like these, also by Denise Schmidt, in the Flea Market Fancy line.

Here are some other prints we like which feature yellow or would complement the other color you have used in the room:

(clockwise from upper left)

  • Wheat Grass Medallions, Eclectic Line by Moda.
  • Ochre Buttercup, Chestnut Hill line by Rowan.
  • Crean Yellow Bows, American Jane-Building Blocks line by Moda.
  • Bird Seed Yellow, Kitchen Collection, by Alexander Henry.

Since your window sills are painted a contrasting color, you might consider making roman shades (like this woman) so you don't end up hiding the sills.

We hope these will get your juices flowing. Readers, what are your ideas?

Is that red thing the changing table?? It's awesome! What is it? It doesn't look like it's meant to be a changing table originally....

On topic, I think the Ochre Buttercup suggested above would be really soft and lovely while still having some color and life to it. I also love polka dots, so maybe a white curtain with tiny green polka dots all over?

I think they'd all be great. My pick would be the ochre buttercup. I also highly recommend replacing the bedding on the bed. It's the uncoordinated note in the room. A blue solid comforter or quilt in the accent color would be awesome. Or find another print that goes well with the curtains.

Ochre Buttercup would be my first choice. I was envisioning something like it.

Thanks for all the comments. The room is still in progress and the yellow is actually a lot brighter during the day than in those pics. the color is benjamin moore's banana yellow.

I found the daybed while thrifting with my sister and she got it for us. I don't think it was intended as a changing table but it is a perfect height. It is a repainted dresser that had the top cut off and was replaced with an old formica table top that is not fully attached- but hardly unstable.

I agree about the daybed bedding and am looking for a newer comforter for that as well. We are thrifting and hand me down-ing as much as possible and so far our nursury has only cost us:
Changing table- $40 ( a gift from my sis so doesn't count but the price is there for reference)
    Rocking chair-$75
    Paint and supplies $100
Old comic books to frame as art work- $2.00

I will continue to update as we continue. Thank you again for all your suggestions- keep them comming!

i like all of the fabrics suggested!
i think they would all look great...and i love them mixed and matched... maybe you could make a few pillows to go here and there in a couple of the prints.

I like the Flea Market Fancy one in blue. I also love the one with the birds (bottom right).

My favorite source for unusual fabrics is reprodepot.com. I also love e-quilter.com.

Charming! I love the colors. And that formica tabletop! Looks great. I am picturing a lot of white in the curtains to give the eyes a rest. A white background with a red print is what I imagine. I'm looking on Hancock's of Paducah (they carry lots of quilt fabrics, including Amy Butler, Denise Schmidt and all my faves; they also are very quick with shipping). I was really looking for red polka dots, but I found this multi-colored dots: http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/item--i-M-15073-11.html or this red daisy: http://www.hancocks-paducah.com/item--i-M-26025-15-RED.html
    this puff flower:

That said, I also love the flea market fancy in yellow. Good luck!
