Good Questions: Fitted Crib Blanket

2008-09-12-fleecebaby.jpg

Reader Pennycarnival posed an interesting question in this week's Open Thread:

Has anyone ever heard of a fitted crib blanket? Not a fitted sheet. A blanket. I've noticed my 11 month old sleeps better with a blanket under her, but just putting one loosey-goosey in her crib doesn't seem safe. If not, anyone have a favorite brand for flannel fitted sheets?

When we first read this question nothing sprang to mind, but in some serendipitous websurfing we stumbled upon fitted fleece sheets which seem pretty close to what Pennycarnival is looking for. Another mother was faced with this same issue - her baby preferred sleeping on a blanket - so she created Fleece Baby sheets. They come in six colors, are super soft and have a deep elasticized pocket to "ensure that as baby turns and tugs on the sheet through the night, the sheet will stay put."

Has anyone tried this or know of a similar product that might suit Pennycarnival's needs?

I love these for both our bed and my DD's crib/toddler bed

They are Canadian made and so soft, and warm. They are even great in the summer as the fabric seems to keep the sweat off of you (we use our queen set year around)

IKEA has plush mattress covers, you can use them as sheets, I suppose (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90124039)

I have seen chenille sheets, but there are patterns online to make your own crib sheets which could be adapted to blanket fabric. That'd actually be a great way to re-use blankets that were otherwise unusable due to stains or tears. Here's one pattern:

Pottery Barn Kids has very heavy fitted chenille crib sheets that are super soft and cozy. I use them in my daughter's crib in the fall and winter.

Kate Quinn Organics has "thick and fuzzy" sherpa sheets. They don't seem to be available right now, but I'm sure they will be back for Fall and Winter.

the Pottery Barn sheets are actually "chamois" not chenille, and are not cotton... if you are interested in them hurry, because they seem to be clearing them out on their website. We use them for our kids, and find they make the bed very cozy.

We bought the wool mattress cover http://www.comfysheep.com/crib-snugfleece.html
It was expensive but it has made a big difference. I highly recommend it.

I think you're looking for these "fitted under blankets," which used in the same way as fitted sheets:

Oh, goodness. I'm just seeing this post now. Thanks so much for highlighting my question, Carrie, and for all the great feedback, everyone. I will check out these links, including the diy instructions since I like to sew.
