apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: Ideas for a "Big Girl Room" Like This?

liv020309.jpgEmily sent in a good question: I found this room in the January 2009 issue of Living Etc. It has become the inspiration for my daughter's "big girl room." I love how creative and inspired it is. So far...

rug020309.jpgI have found similar bunk beds here (the one in the picture is only available in the UK). I also bought the rug (shown above) because I loved it and thought I could work with the colors.

Do you or your readers have any suggestions for bedding ideas? Also, do you have any idea where I can find the flower wall decals or something similar? I'm early in the project and any suggestions are much appreciated.

Take it away, Ohdeedoh readers! Please share your ideas for bedding, decals and other suggestions with Emily in the comment section...thanks!

i think that jc penney has some different bedding sets that would go great with that rug. i was just looking thorugh the catalog last night.

you can always free hand the flowers. or if you have access find some clip art ones that you like and then get a projector and trace them onto the wall and then paint.

lots and lots of people on etsy.com make vinyl decals. I would suggest checking there.

I love this quilt at pb teen available in lots of different colors.

I think a solid bed would be best with the patterny rug. you can have fun sheets underneath and fun decorative pillows.

The photo brought to mind the bedding at Plover Organics, which I have been drooling over for a while. They are not cheap, but they are beautiful.

Not sure about more reasonable alternatives...maybe try some bedding at Anthropologie?

My 4.5 yo has a big girl room with a similar feel. Her room has lots of lavender with purple, hot pink and red accents. Our favorite thing about her room right now is the old wooden chair that we picked up at a yard sale and painted bright purple. It looks great with the simple white desk that will be great for school work later but gives her a nice spot to color out of her baby brother's reach right now.

Hi. I am an interior designer of kids spaces and I make bedding from your own fabrics or ones I find. I have a fabulous quilter who makes my comforters and bed jackets. A bed jacket is the way to go because it stays neat and is easy to put on. For the decals, the above resources are great. If you want your own colors I paint murals and pictorals. see: www.charmandwhimsy.com

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a "bed jacket"? I've never heard that term used before.
