Good Questions: Illustration Program

doozlascreencap.jpgMaggie sent us an e-mail, "My 5-year-old loves to draw using my Photoshop program on our Mac, but of course, it's waaaay to complicated for him to use.

Do you know of a cool and inexpensive computer drawing program, that doesn't have any popular cartoon characters backing it up, that would be fun for a 5-year-old to use?"

Good question, Maggie.

We recently found Doozla while looking for a drawing program for our son and found it easy to use and entertaining. Your child can color kooky characters, or create their own drawing. What we really like about Doozla, is that each line your child creates becomes a smooth line. Pixels aren't used with Doozla, so you don't get those jagged, boxy corners you see in many children's drawing programs.

Doozla will also import snapshots from iSight, so you can draw on a photo of your own face. Add some glasses to your mug; draw on a mustache and make yourself a pirate or an ironic hipster! Doozla is just as entertaining for you as it is for the kids.

What about you, readers? Do you have any programs you can recommend to Maggie?

KidPix...it's been around in schools for ages, but it is still great. My son got it for Hannukah last year at age 5 and could figure it out pretty well. You can also do some photoediting in it.
