Good Questions: Inexpensive Modern Toddler Bed?

pkolino052009.jpgStephanie is looking for some recommendations: My son recently turned two and is ready to move out of his crib. His room is small and we will be moving in a year so we're looking for a toddler bed (I know a lot of people think toddler beds are a waste since kids grow out of them so fast, but he wouldn't have much room to play if we moved him to a twin size bed right now)....

I'm looking for something modern, but not too expensive. So far I have my eye on the Pkolino Toddler bed, but I wonder if I'm missing other great options. Do you have any suggestions?

Please share any suggestions, recommendations and sources with Stephanie in the comments below...thanks!

The Pkolino Toddler bed is really cute, but you may also want to check the Ikea Kritter.

I've been on both sides of the fence about toddler beds but they really do save space not just in the room but as far as bedding and linens go. And I'm pretty sure my five year old would still fit on one if we had done that. Good luck!

My favorite Ikea bed (and the plan for the twins) is the expandable bed.

It's a little wider than the toddler beds and it goes from toddler bed length all the way up to regular bed length.

I have this one for $59, and it matches my Pottery Barn Kids furniture (in espresso) very well:

You can always forgo a toddler bed and use the crib mattress as a futon on the floor! My daughter has a small room and is 2. This has been an excellent solution. Montessori recommends placing the bed on the floor for very young children. No rails needed. If she rolls out, it is only onto the floor, a few inches down and I spread a blanket on the floor, so that she rolls off and just keeps sleeping in comfort. They can get in and out independently and it is safer. It is all soft and No slats or rails to get caught up or pinched in. The bed looks very cute on the floor with some pillows, like a day bed. My daughter sits on her bed all the time during the day (as do her little friends), which she would not do with one of these railed beds. It even makes a great lounging spots for mom and dad for reading books with the little one. Good luck with whatever you choose!

One of the great things about the P'kolino toddler bed is that it turns into a chair. I have the white one for my daughter and once she outgrows using it as a bed, we're definitely going to turn it into the chair.
