Good Questions: Lightweight Jogging Stroller

2007_10_03_jogging stroller.jpg Stephanie needs to replace a stolen jogging stroller. Dear AT: Here's my dilemma: We used to have a Q-series baby jogger stroller and I used it everyday. Recently it was stolen from our apartment building, though. It was heavy and too hard for me to carry up and down the four flights of stairs with a 6-month old in my arms so I left it in the vestibule area where other people in our building leave their strollers. Now, bummer, we have to purchase a new one.

I have learned my lesson and this time I'd like to pick a jogging stroller that's lightweight and easy to collapse so that I can get it up to our apartment on the fourth floor. All of the websites that I've looked at don't always list the weight of the stroller but, instead, how much weight it can hold! Help!

Stephanie, it sounds like you don't need a jog after carrying your baby and stroller up and down four flights of stairs! While we don't have first-hand experience with jogging strollers, we can point you toward a website that specifies stroller weight: JoggingStroller. Under the specifications of each stroller you can see both the stroller's weight and the maximum capacity weight. We also love that the site has plenty of parent reviews to read.

Readers - do you have a jogging stroller that you love? Is it lightweight? Let Stephanie know in the comments.

I used the three wheeled Jeep stroller. It wasnt a specific jogging stroller so it wasnt quite as spring-y as, say Bob, but the advantage was it was cheap ($100 ish -- noe about $150) and also very adjustable and comfortable for my children. Not so good for little babies, good for 1 year to 3 years old I would say. here is a link http://www.jeepworld.com/merchandise/jeepstrollers.htm

The other thing I liked about this stroller is that it was easy to fold up and put in the back of my car. And after using it for two kids, I handed it down to a friend who has morphed it into a golf bag holder stroller. So the point is -- quite sturdy.

If you do get this one, keep the pump or use another pump. It works a lot better as a jogger when the tires are inflated properly.

We have a foldable Kelty jogger. It's still quite bulky once folded...it'm not sure it would be much fun to carry up the stairs with a baby in arms, due to that, not the weight.
This site has great reviews of all kinds of strollers...many I have never even heard of!

Perhaps one solution is to lock the stroller in the vestibule? I know bike locks can be cut through, but if there are other strollers there, too maybe the one with the lock will be the least attractive?

hi-

I'm a self-confessed strollerjunkie. A good place to check out is the strollerqueen forums. You can join the yahoo group, and ask away about strollers. I found the group EXTREMELY helpful, and collectively ehy have driven almost every stroller out there.

In my personal experience, if you go inexpensive or lightweight, you're going to lose in terms of the jogging quality. This might not matter as much if you don't really jog, but rather use the stroller mainly for tooling around the city and walking around the park. In that case maybe a jeep or an instep might be ok.

But, if you actually jog, i think you will regret not getting a quality jogging stroller like a BabyJogger or a BOB. Both are highly rated by strollerqueen members and have a loyal following. I personally prefer the fold of the BabyJogger city series. You can find this model used on CL and also on the strollerqueen board if you don't want to cough up the money for a new one. Also check out returnsforsale.com . They often have jogging strollers for sale that are really good deals.

I would get another high end jogger (either another Q series or a Bob) but I would get it off Craigslist so you don’t loose much if it’s stolen again. I think you’ll be happier with that than a lower quality one. You could try locking it too if there is bike storage in the area.

Some high end joggers have quick release wheels. If you took one wheel upstairs with you, that might be a good theft deterrant.
