Sara sent us an email: "Baby #3 is on the way and I'm in the market for a new rocking chair. With #1
and #2, we had a glider that was functional but not so pretty. We'd like to
find a comfortable yet modern looking rocker... do any exist? Please don't
suggest an Eames fiberglass shell rocker... I'd like some padding.
Thanks! Sara"
There are some good options available, in a wide variety of price ranges. A few we'd recommend checking out include:
• Carter Swivel Glider: Room and Board's offering, for $699
• Poang: Chair at IKEA, for $199
• Sleepytime Rocker: Nice lines, at Giggle for $900 (pictured above)
• Eddy rocker: On the pricier end, from Ducduc at $1350
• Goodnight glider: From Nurseryworks, at $1100
• James rocker: Definitely not your standard glider/rocker, from $349 (depending on fabric choice) at EQ3
Do people have other ideas for Sara, or experience with any of the rockers listed above?
what is the rocker in the photo?
I don't have any babies yet, but I've thought a Thomas Moser rocker might be a wonderful splurge when I do. Pricey to be sure, but a lot less pricey (if memory serves) than a full dining set from Thomas Moser.
The rocker above is the Sleepytime Rocker, available at Giggle.
we have the nurseryworks sleepytime rocker pictured (even the colors!). i love it -- i know that i read and was told that babies prefer the gliding motion, but my baby loves the straight-up rocking of this chair. the chair is very comfy and the ultrasuede has been perfectly resistant to everything. i need a stool with it, though, and i wish it had the airplane seat wings for your head some nights! but the height of the arms is just right for resting your elbow with the baby's head on it, and for that reason i'm very glad that it's padded. and i like the way it looks. for us, it was worth the money.
By far, the best glider there is out there is the Monte glider: http://www.montedesign.net/modern_nursery_glider.html. It's a glider that actually is stylish, and isn't oversized neither. They have 2 styles, and matching ottomans. I had plenty trouble looking for a glider or rocker too and bought the Eames rocker. But I continued hunting for a padded yet stylish rocker, and I finally found it! I plan to buy it when we have our next baby.
check out the chairs at monarchnursery.com - so fab and stylish.
That sleepytime rocker is also available at Sparkability and they have a couple others too.

I saw this one at dwr a while back, and while it doesn't have padding, it folds!

that james chair is just dumb design for the sake of design. try getting out of that thing holding a screaming baby.
I remember not that long ago that Maxwell and SK bought one from R&B that I am thinking of getting for myself (sans kid!!).
http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/collection.do?method=get&id=4197392&cat=26
It has padding, is modern, comes in many colors, and is only $899! (compared to these others, very reasonable).
Plus R&B is quality.
Maxwell, can you comment on the practicality of the Hubbard? How do you like it?
We got this one for our nursery, pricey but so worth it. And Jason will customize the chair, he made us one with a higher back perfect for late night nursing. It's so invaluable to have a rocker that you can rest your head back on. And that fits in a small NYC apt.:

I will champion the chair that I am always championing (I am a one-woman cheering section!), and which I just ordered for myself. I am not sure why more design afficionados are not getting it for themselves, but it is, for my money, the best looking and most comfortable modern rocker of the lot.
It was designed in 1959/60 by the Finn Yrjö Kukkkapuro and is called the Moderno Rocker (it is actually the rocking chair in the Moderno line -- if you REALLY like it, you can always order matching dining chairs! :-))
Here it is:
http://www.lepoproduct.fi/pics/tuotteet/L66.pdf
It is padded, upholstered and very well proportioned for comfort (nice and high, good seat depth and width...)
Babygeared and Sparkability used to offer it, but no longer do; perhaps poor sales due to the $1800-2300 price tag and supposed 12 week wait. Being in Canada, with no retailers, I ordered it direct from the manufacturer (which you can probably now do since no one seems to be selling it in the U.S.) I think the price of the rocker was approximately 400-600 Euros + shipping, depending on the fabric selected. I actually had them use a Designers Guild fabric, so paid somewhat more (but still much less than retail). I think the shipping quote I got for Canada was something in the order of $350. Not bad. Factor in duties and/or taxes. However, since we are moving to Europe, I am having it shipped to our new address -- much cheaper, faster, and no taxes or duties.
I agree with an JL above. The search to find a nice glider is over. The monte design luca glider is beautiful, comfortable, and a great value if you ask me. I highly recommend it!
Nurseryworks also sells a wider rocker, the Storytime and a glider, the Goodnight. Each has a matching ottoman -- all available at www.piccolinionline.com/nurseryworks2.html.
Here is a great selection of modern rockers and gliders:

Nurseryworks! The design is fantastic. HOWEVER, once they get your money, they don't stand behind the product. They dragged out my delivery for so long (six months) that our baby was here for four months until we got the damn thing. Spoke with friends who told me they had a similar experience.
There are so many other options. If you want to take a chance, do so. Otherwise, I would stay away.
Thanks for all the eyecandy rocking chairs! Beautiful!
It appears I'm the only parent here w/o money! We're still students, so my baby's rocking comes directly from mama's body. Takes up less space I suppose ;)
Great suggestions! This definitely gives me lots of options. Thanks so much...

Has anyone tried the Eames rocking chair? Is it comfortable?

I used modernmini.com and had a HORRIBLE experience. First they double charged my credit card, then they took 1 month to deliver my package and when it arrived it was cracked. When you call in to there customer service they tell you that they have to contact modern mini and they'll get back to you in a day or 2. (what are they sending questions via regular mail?) When i finally got a response from customer service I was told that i had to pay return shipping for the part that was broken and for a replacement. What a rip-off!! I'm contacting the better business bureau. Don't use modern mini buy from any other online manufacturer!!
