Elizabeth writes: I have a self-proclaimed “Good Question” that I hope someone can help me with. My husband and I inherited his Grammy’s antique, white rocking chair (similar to the picture attached) when she passed away last year. It’s a beautiful family heirloom, rocks well and is in great shape. Thankfully, it’s not too “frilly” for my minimalist, modern taste. I’d like to incorporate it into our new baby’s nursery but the thought of late-night feedings in it makes me ache! It’s hard wood and it needs some cushions...

Drape this over it - or something like it.

I refinished a plain wooden rocker for my son's nursery. I found basic tufted cushions on line. JCPenny.com I think. Solid colors, no ruffles. :) If you can sew, I'm sure you could make something more impressive. but that was not a project I wanted to undertake at the moment.

PS and get a "nursing stool" to prop your feet up for those late night feedings. (Like this, but I think you can find them in other finishes too: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2403243)

I definitely agree about a nursing stool. They're great.
This site has some chair pads that would fit a modern aesthetic.

You'd have to take some measurements to see if the dimensions would work.
If not, and you don't sew, you could just pick some fabric and use the alchemy feature at etsy to find someone to make something for you. http://www.etsy.com/alchemy/

You'll breastfeed on the sofa in the living room, and use the rocker to rock a fussy baby back to sleep... very few rockers are good for breastfeeding, and every mom I know used the sofa (we have a great breastfeeding rocker, but that only came with babe number 2).

i have a similar rocker and bought a comfy modern cushion from carousel designs which you can find from that link posted above. while it makes my rocker comfy enough for sitting or rocking, it is not a good breast feeding spot. especially late at night! your bed, the sofa and a boppy pillow will become your new best friends.

I second the sheepskin idea -- no sewing required, easy to adjust, and more modern looking than most pre fab seat cushions. Plus, you can move it to the floor or use it as a playmat when you no longer need it on the rocker.

Wow, that is a gorgeous rocking chair! You can buy some inexpensive throw pillows (like at IKEA) that fit the dimensions of the rocker and then make pillow covers in a fabric that goes with your room. Here's a tutorial:

It's ridiculously easy if you have a sewing machine - you can attach ribbons to tie it onto the rocker. I did this for our thrift store rocker in my son's room.

At first I did nurse mostly on the sofa or in bed as others mention, but as the baby got bigger I didn't need as much support and now (11 months) I nurse him to sleep in this rocker multiple times a day and it's fairly comfortable. If I would add anything else it would be cushions for the arms but I'm not sure how to go about that.

(Robin, your baby's room is FANTASTIC! I love the fabric you used on the cushions and curtains you referenced. Very cool!)

A cushion for the seat, a warm throw over the back in winter. Grab a pillow to tuck between you and the arm of the rocker, to support the baby for nursing.

Thanks mere1975! The fabric is Heather Ross' Giant Octopi
