Good Questions: Nursery Bedding to Go With Malabar?

malabar022209.jpgChristina sent us a good question: I am having trouble finding any sort of acceptable bedding for our nursery. It's a small room (10x10) and the back wall has Cole & Son Malabar wallpaper in black & white. We will be using a Jenny Lind style crib in an ebony finish...

I'd like some sort of simple b&w bedding to go with it - it seems that all the "boy" bedding is in colors or patterns to "cutesy" for my taste. Or else they're all brown & a color. Any thoughts?

Please share your suggestions with Christina in the comments below...

I'd personally go with a bright pop of color against a black and white background, but here is a cute black and white crib set with just a little pop of lime:

black and white crib bedding is hard to find - i looked for a while and ended up with a colored set myself. per Michelle's idea of a bright pop of color, what about this set in bright green? http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/nb51/index.cfm?pkey=cboys%2Dnursery%2Dbedding%7Cb

I agree about including a color but barring that, what about just white likes this set from PBK: http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/zb118/index.cfm?pkey=corganic%2Dnursery%2Dbedding%7Cb (or the even more $$$$$$ set from dwell studio here: http://dwellshop.com/b2c/ecom/ecomEnduser/items/xt_itemDetailNF.aspx?oFamily=CIRCLE&siteId=1&itemNum=B520-10-99&bulkexists=0)

Or if your crib isn't going to be on the wall papered wall consider black toile (if you google "toile nursery bedding black" tons of options pop up).

What color is on the other walls?

here are some b&w crib bedding ideas:

also, both target and wal mart have a damask looking b&w crib set right now - similar to your wall paper.

Assuming you have pops of color in other places, I think black and white bedding would look spectacular.

I suggest buying white knit sheets (practical, easy to clean) and having a bed skirt if you want it custom-made out of cream or white & black ticking fabric in a tailored style. (They take about 1/5 hours to make.) I think the combination would look fabulous. Bumpers, of course, are unsafe and shouldn't be used. This would look great with an abstract red mobile, the danish type. Personally, I would spend more on a high quality natural matres than bedding.

Another option would be a very bright sheet such as the orange sheet featured at the site the other day from giggle.

Although its a bit pricey Restoration Hardware has a baby line that is very simple and nice. Check it out here: http://www.rhbabyandchild.com/rhbc/catalog/category/category_collections_gallery.jsp;jsessionid=5OUD5DDRVVEANLAWCQMSAOVMCYKBIIDC?navAction=jump&navCount=0&categoryId=rhbc_cat101037

How about a nice grey flannel? You could do a pinstripe for a menswear effect, or a beautiful heather flannel for a more casual feel. Both would look great with that wall paper and not look girly.

My other idea is balck and white houndstooth. If the wallpaper desgin is large-scale, go with a smaller houndstooth. Or if the wallpaper scale in small, go with an exploded houndstooth.

Instead of the predictable lime green accent, I'd go with a vivid blue. Either royal or azure.

I like the color idea, too.

Have you considered buying a graphic quilt? If you go on Etsy, there are lots of custom quiltmakers. You could pick solids that are all in one color family, it might look really chic.

Our crib bumper had large graphic animals on it, and our son spent a lot of time looking at them, reaching for them, learning their sounds, etc. Even if you go simple (I love the ticking stripe idea) for the outside, remember how much time the baby will spend in there. Overstock has very cute (and affordable) sets, and occasionally they have some nice B&W ones. This might work for you: http://www.overstock.com/Baby/Cotton-Tale-Arctic-Baby-4-piece-Crib-Bedding-Set/3346023/product.html
IKEA has at times carried B&W kids bedding as well, but their graphics may not be quite right for your style. The wallpaper is lovely. Good luck!

Carousel has this black and white damask fabric that would work: http://www.babybedding.com/black-and-white-damask-collection-fabric (unfortunately many of the items have some sort of pink trim, but a few of them don't). They have a lot of black and white items http://www.babybedding.com/tag-black-and-white and the toile patterns would work too.

If you wanted to add some color: http://www.babybedding.com/light-blue-toile-crib-bedding or http://www.babybedding.com/baby-toile-sky-crib-bedding or http://www.babybedding.com/baby-toile-sage-crib-bedding

Ikea's Barnslig is one of my favorites in a cute but modern black and white print. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50144812

I agree with JudiAU: spend your money on a good non-toxic mattress, cotton pad and wool puddle pad, get some nice white or cream sheets, and call it a day. Your wallpaper is beautiful, and the room will look great.
