Good Questions: Photographer in NYC for Family Shoot?

ohdeedoh042209.jpgMichelle writes: I live in New York and have a 4 month old baby. I'd like to have some photos taken of her with my husband and me. I'm looking for someone who shoots film, not digital, to take candid photos of us in our apartment.

I've tried doing searches on the site for photographer recos be can't find any. I'm looking to spend up to a few hundred dollars for a fee. Can you recommend anyone?

I would contact the schools in your area and see what photography programs they have. You could place a notice in their department stating what you are looking for. I bet a college student would love to make a couple hundred bucks :) You could ask to see some of their work ahead of time to make sure you get what you want.

I took a photography class at SVA, and the instructor keeps a list of students who are interested in assignments. Many of them are very talented and looking for more experience.
The website of the instructor is:

I've worked with Gerri Hernandez on several different kinds of projects, including children's candids and she's great (and very reasonably priced)! People I know used her for family photos and were very happy with the results. She does both film and digital. Here's her website: www.gerripix.com.

Tell her Alex Farkas sent you her way.

Good luck,
Alex Farkas

In San Francisco, Hayley Durack is the greatest. She takes the most beautiful candid shots wherever you want and the package she presents is gorgeous. Here is her website with some examples.

For a GREAT NYC photographer, try Lionel Closson. He's a French native, father of three who has worked in film for many years and has recently started a photography business. His photographs are GORGEOUS! They're intimate, but also have a narrative twist: http://www.lionelclossonphotography.com/

Many photographers are open to national travel as well...you can look at PPA (professional photographers association for a directory of child photographers). I am a child photographer that travels to NYC -- and while I shoot digital, many of my images are reminiscent of film. A natural, candid approach -- yet still thoughtfully composed:

I highly recommend Dian Lofton she is a wonderful infant, child photographer! She is in the NYC area and will come to your home.
She took beautiful pictures of my 3 year old son and newborn twins. The bonus part is she is a mommy and totally relates to feeding and nap schedules.
Check out her website: www.dianlofton.com

I am sure that you can find a great photographer in NY who shoots with film -- personally, I would check for great wedding photographers, they tend to do babies & families for their clients after they marry -- but we use a fabulous photographer for our family. And as someone pointed out, photographers travel.

Here are the pictures she took of our daughter -- they were shot on b&w film, and I find them beautifully candid.
