Good Questions: Relaxing & Reading Chair for Toddler?

Anywhere Chair031009.jpgA question from Sunny: My husband and I would like to purchase a chair for our soon-to-be 1-year old. We'd like him to be able to use it to read and relax in for at least the next year or two. The only good option we've been able to find is the Pottery Barn Anywhere Chair, but it is a bit pricey, around $160 (tax and shipping included). Can you recommend any other options?

Our son was given the Pottery Barn chair pictured, and it really was disappointing. Unless it's propped against a wall, it tips over backward very easily. Definitely a safety issue. We eventually gave it away because we couldn't take our eyes off our son for a second when he was sitting in it. He wanted to jump on it, and it was so tippy that we weren't constantly worried he'd hurt himself.

what about a "nice" bean bag chair.

I have the PBK chair as well - and it does tip backwards when climbed on if unsupported (we lean it agains another piece of furniture or the wall). My kid loves it and I love the fabric we got (the Monkey pattern which I believe is discontinued). I am not too proud to admit that I bought the insert for about half the cost on eBay (and there are usually many choices for covers on eBay as well).

We've had the Ikea Poang for our nearly three year old for about a year and a half and really like it.

How about the Ikea Poang?

There are lots of web tutorials about recovering it if you don't like the plain look of it.

We've had this about a year and a half and it has done really well, even with normal toddler wear and tear.

we were just given a stylus chair www.stylussofas.com
the style is Kids (the fabric on the website is horrible) we were able to pick our own fabric out of their hundreds of options.

It was a gift to my daughter from my mother so unsure of the cost, but it is handbuilt in Vancouver and very sturdy and will last a long time! She loves it!

My kids love IKEA's Lomsk, lined with an IKEA sheepskin, which makes it very comfy and cozy:

Of course, the best kid's chair is the Ava by Jennifer Delonge, which comes in toddler and child sizes, and lots of fabric options including vintage and COM. Expensive, but great.

We got a $20 kids size bean bag chair from Target. Our daughter loves it and can move it around to wherever she wants. It's awesome, looks great, and takes up very little space.

I second the bean bag option. Also, check out what Target has. I believe they have the kid sized recliner-looking chairs and they have cute bean bags and chairs like the PB one you're asking about too.

We have the Monte Cubino chair and my toddler loves it! We have been very happy with the quality and will be purchasing a 2nd one for our next kiddo.

I used to work for a furniture store and we sold the Stylus line. The kids chairs are just as well made as the full sized ones and the fabric choices are endless. It can be a bit pricey though - most likely over the $200 mark :)

The PB chair and Land of Nod chair are practically the same and tippy because they're not weighted. You can buy the foam inserts on eBay to save money.

A bean bag works great for tots who love to climb, crawl down, or roll off furniture. Also works for reading in various positions.

Obviously chairs aren't meant for stunts, but tots are going to do them.

We have the oversized Anywhere Chair for our 15 month old. He LOVES it but it's true that it tips over if it is not against something. How about a floor cushion or beanbag chair? Land of Nod has some nice ones for less than the Anywhere Chair: http://www.landofnod.com/spill.aspx?c=325&pc=32

We have the Land of Nod chair. So far, Isaac (2yo) is more enthusiastic about the big box the foam pieces came in than he is about the actual chair.

I usually put the chair against a wall or against our coffee table, which is a big trunk, because it will tip if you're not sitting in it like a civilized person, and my boy isn't all that civilized.

The cats adore the chair, anyway.

I bought the P'Kolino Little Reader Chair from Amazon.com ($70 with free shipping). It's great. It's pretty sturdy and doesn't tip over when my daughter is sitting in it. She does, however, like to push it over and drag it around the living room.

I have the Toddlerock chair and ottoman and am very pleased with the sturdiness and quality. They shipped it to Canada and we did a simple brown chenille which wipes clean nicely and we just vacuum it for crumbs and my almost 3 year old son still loves it. I cannot recall him ever tipping it backward though I am sure any chair potentially could but the rocker bottom versus legs helps it stay upright. It doesn't really rock that much which you don't want anyway.

You got lots of responses with recommendations for expensive chairs!

Get cushions for the floor. Kids like sitting on the floor. It's good for them.

Get a Target toddler chair and recover it. Maybe the PBK covers would fit.

Get a chair which is large enough for both of you to sit and and a little footstool for him to use for climbing up. My daughter likes the grownup chairs.

Look on Craigslist.

I recently bought the rather inexpensive, Ikea Latt table and chairs for my 17 month old. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20072816 She loves to climb on the chairs, carry them around, and sit and read or play at the table. Plus there's a second chair for a friend. When she wants to recline, she helps herself to a pillow from our sofa and lays on it with a book.

We don't have a lot of space in our apartment and this seemed like a good compromise to me.

I got a similar chair at Big Lots for about $35. I have seen them there since. The fabric is a little cheap but I plan to sew a slip cover eventually. My son loves it and it's perfect for the price.

Ross had a childs chair for 60.00. It reminded me of a 50's style rock and roll. It would not match our decor. I am also looking for chairs for our 14 month old. Bean bags would be very hard for him to get off of. Our floors are hard and I could imagine alot of bumped heads. I like my Ikea fruniture I already have. I did not like the chairs I tried out but Chrildens chairs might be a different story. I also liked these from another poster suggesting something else. http://www.landofnod.com/family.aspx?c=325&f=2291&pc=32
We tried a couch cousion for our son and he did fine with that. But a plop down chair is really what I am looking for too. Let us know what you decided on!!!

I love the kids faux-leather club chair at Target. Haven't bought it yet, but all it will take is a sale to turn that "I don't know..." into an "absolutely!"

It is out of stock online now, but I'm pretty sure it's still available in the store.

I'd check out Ikea for sure.

I'd also look for low-to-the-ground kids' couches that an adult could sit on with the kid. We got one such item on sale at Design Within Reach's warehouse sale years ago. Sadly, they closed out their kid's line, but if you could find a used one somewhere, it's pretty cool.

(Keep in mind a one-year-old is not going to sit still and read for years!)

I saw a posting elsewhere (sorry, can't remember where) that you can find the PB chair inserts on ebay for pretty cheap - last I checked, they were $35, then you can get the slipcover and put it together yourself for 1/2 the price.
