Good Questions: Searching for the Perfect Nightlight

turtlenightlight070209.jpgMandy writes: I'm in search of the perfect night light. Something that my two-year old son can not pull out of the socket and is not so over-stimulating that he won't fall asleep. We've tried a light sensitive wall socket one that only turns on when it is dark enough in the room. He ate it. We tried the plush turtle and he insisted on sleeping with it in his bed and then stayed up three nights in a row talking about it (he shares a room with his twin sister and they loooved it.)...

We want something simple, that doesn't shed too much light or have to many tricks and will remain stationary. Any ideas?

Please share your suggestions and sources for nightlights (preferably non-edible) with Mandy in the comments below...thanks!

our daughter loves her "moon-in-my-room". just the right kind of glow and it has a remote that she can use to turn it back on if she needs to dart it to the bathroom at night.

we like that it shuts itself off after 30 minutes or so, but i could see how for some that might be its downfall.

We have the Oxo Candela set for my son (age 2.5). We hung a small square box display shelf thingie on his wall and the nightlights live there at night. He can't reach the shelf (and therefore can't mess with the nightlights). The nightlights are sweet little guys who emit enough light to keep monsters at bay (and permit Mom & Dad to see if they check on the kids at night) but they aren't so bright as to keep kids awake.

I had the shelf on hand already, but it was from Target years ago and probably only cost about $10.

great ideas so far. Thanks. I think the moon might be the winner.

He's too young for this one, but for the near future, when you will want to teach him it's OK to leave the room/enter mom and dad's room:

My kids loved the Moon in my Room as well but after 2 years it started randomly flickering even in the middle of the night and nothing we could do would stop it. We tried to cover up the light sensor since we thought that might be the problem but to no avail. It scared both my kids so now we have another broken piece of plastic. It was nice for the 2 years, just disappointing that it broke and it was never dropped or anything.

We have the IKEA Spoka, and I think it lights the room up way too much.

My son also would play with the twilight turtle as well. Since he has to have music or a sound machine- I got the 'homedics soundspa lullaby' for $19 at Bed bath and beyond. My sister recommended it. I let him see it in the daytime in order for him to have the initial excitement and then used it at night: Music and rotating star disc. He watched it and fell asleep!! This is a kid that wouldn't ever go to sleep on his own. He's 2.

Our favorite is the MOBI TykeLight - the one with a stand-alone charging base, the changing colors and the sleep timer (the newest one). It is so great that I've bought it for several friends for their kids. The kids and I all find it very soothing to watch, and it's a great shape for kids' hands, and it's cleanable.

We love this:

http://www.safety1st.com/usa/eng/Products/Home-Safety/Electrical/Details/81-48309-Dim-n-Bright-Auto-Sensor-Night-Light

It replaces the plastic wall socket cover by being screwed to the socket, and the light has adjustable levels. The bottom socket is covered (not shown in pic) for safety but still usable by an adult.

We've installed 3 of them, in her room and on the route to the bathroom. Since they're at socket level, they light her path nicely.

We have a moon in my room which is aesthetically pleasing. It's not too bright and you can hang it out of their reach, yet the remote is simple enough for a 1 1/2 year old. It is nice that it turns off by itself as well. Two drawbacks are that it eats batteries and doesn't take rechargables and it does turn on with the most minimum of interference. We also have a bunny light that my son loves. But if your are trying to avoid cords this is not for you. We also have a light switch cover that glows in the dark. This way he can turn on the light himself when he wakes. I am also considering getting a led light that is motion sensitive and sticks on the wall with a kind of adhesive tape. I think Philips makes one for around 10$.

My son loves the OXO candela, and the battery lasts a long time, so you can take it on trips. AND I just saw it last week at either Marshalls or TJ maxx (can't remember where I was..) for $10.

For home, the Moon in my Room is also a big hit, but he does spend a lot of time not sleeping and playing with the remote.

You might just consider changing the overhead light switch to a dimmer and just turn it down really low at night.

we have the ikea smila bagge (the green bug one) and it was mounted on my sons headboard wall, but i find it too bright to leave on all night. it provides enough light for his night time story which is nice but it also distracts him- he loves flipping the switch on the cord on and off to see the bug light up- so i usually end up unplugging it if hes getting too crazy with it. lol.

i think i may try the oxo candelas next.

My 8-year old has "The Moon in My Room" and L-O-V-E-S it. My (almost) 2 year old has the turtle (shown above) and asks for "turtle stars" at night. He likes it w/the green light.

We also have the IKEA moon-shaped light on his wall - it's a nice lamp to keep on for ambient light. It's "way" across the room from his crib (about 10'), so it's not too bright w/a low-voltage bulb.
