Good Questions: Substitute For IKEA Gulliver Crib?

2007-07-10-gulliver.jpg
We were surprised to read the news in Meg's email to us
...

Help! I love the IKEA Gulliver crib, but it's been discontinued! Any recommendations for something similar, design and price-wise? Thanks so much.

2007-07-10-sniglar.jpgDear Meg:

The Gulliver, discontinued?!!?! We also are fans of the Gulliver as are many in the AT: Nursery community.

First, we did check online and Gulliver has been removed from the U.S. site. We would suggest going to or calling the IKEA store in your area to see if they have any left in stock.

If you don't have any luck, how about IKEA's Sniglar crib? It has clean lines and is similar to the Gulliver, with slightly more narrow legs and sides. Sniglar is made of solid beech, has 2 height positions and is $80.

Does anyone have a Gulliver crib for Meg?

I had been trying to decide between the Gulliver and this Child Craft one: http://www.childcraftindustries.com/common/item.php?Site=childcraft&Item=215

At target.com, it was $180, but seems to be out of stock right now.

hmm. Still here in Switzerland...

What is interesting about it is that it is flagged as a "New" product as they have just shrunk the size of all the European cribs. Maybe the crib will be reintroduced in North America in a new size? Might be worth trying tp check into.

I was at Ikea on July 3rd to buy the Gulliver (thanks to all the positive reviews), and they confirmed that it's been discontinued. The Sniglar has similar clean lines and can be painted or stained, but I felt like it was not as solid construction as the Gulliver. It felt more flimsy upon inspection.

I ended up buying the Room and Board Nest crib in a nice simple maple Arts and Crafts style: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product.do?method=get&id=808970&coll=378376&cat=96

I wasn't pleased with the high price tag. It seems like the crib market is split between Ikea around $200 and everything else well above $700!

The Childcraft one is very nice- we actually had our hearts set on that one. However, we tried for months to get it from Target (that was almost 12 months ago) and were told when we called that they might not be getting it in again (weird that it's still on there). I think the only other vendor that we could find that carried it online was BabyDepot (at that time- and they were also sold out). Then we called Childcraft, and they don't take direct orders (!??!). After months of trying, we ended up with the Ikea Tassa instead.

Even though the Ikea crib is discontinued- many stores will still have it in stock. You can have your local Ikea find out if any other stores within driving distance may have it. I also suggest calling their 800 number, even if the product is no longer on their website (while they don't seem to be able to ship much, they actually do ship a few of their cribs/beds).

Meg - Remember Becky Andrew (in DC area) got their Gulliver as late as the end of May so definitely call!

I'll try calling, but I'm pretty sure it's gone because last time I checked online for the NJ stores, it said it was out of stock. I just assumed a new order was on its way. Now I realize that probably wasn't the case.

I'm cursing my stupidity too -- I was at IKEA plenty of times before my baby was born and I could have gotten the crib but since I have a family cradle we're using for the first few months, I just figured I'd wait until I needed it. Doh!

Is anyone familiar with this Lollipop Crib in White by AP Industries that's for sale at Buy Buy Baby?

The Child Craft crib I mentioned is in stock on BabyDepot.com and BabyAnt.com. $199 at one and $229 at the other. Don't know what their shipping/tax are though.

It's still available in Canada. The Montreal-area stores (the closest to you) seem to have it in stock (e.g. Boucherville).

It may seem far, but we have zipped down to NYC on one-day trips to pick up building supplies (from Ottawa), and it is not far. Just send the hubby by himself if you do not want to go.

Can't say enough good things about the Gulliver, as our 2nd babe sleeps in it.

I bought the Childcraft no dropside crib at Albeebaby.com just last week. They have excellent customer service-- the crib made it from NJ to Mississippi in less than a week-- and free shipping on orders over $100. I almost made the trek over to Atlanta to purchase the Gulliver from Ikea, but now I am glad I didn't . . .

Ok, turns out there are Gullivers still in stock in Paramus, NJ. My husband is en route as I write this, so hopefully we'll be Gullivered by nightfall. An IKEA customer service rep I spoke with said the Gulliver is discontinued as of August 1, 2007. Thanks for the help and suggestions!

Someone from IKEA baltimore told me today that the Gulliver is not discontinued. It showed in their computer as two different things - Gulliver, and Gulliver NEW. They said that perhaps there is a new distributor, which could be causing them to not be in stock? The Baltimore store was out of stock of them, but could see that 8 were on their way to the store. This is all very confusing!

In other IKEA crib news, there was a new crib listed on their in-store computer - it was a primary blue color, and pretty modern looking. I couldn't decide if i liked it or not, but it is interesting - and priced at $119, if i remember correctly. I can't find it anywhere online yet, though.

The new catalog comes out in August...

If anyone's still looking at this old thread--I really liked the Lollipop crib. It's not as cheap as the Gullliver, but it's made of solid birch, and it seems like a really well-made, solid crib. And you can get it in many colors! I didn't get it in the end, got a Nurseryworks Loom crib because I liked the height, but it seems worth the expense. And it's much nicer looking than the Gulliver.

Hi Pencils.

Not sure if you are still looking at this thread but, we are going to buy the Loom crib and wanted to know if you liked the crib.

Thanks!

Not sure if you're still wondering but the Gulliver crib is available now. I just got the newest catalog from IKEA and regularly check their website and this crib is on there. We're planning on getting this crib or one of the others from IKEA as they are all very similar.
