Kelly sent us in this photo collage and a good question: Hi! I am due next month and need some decorating help for my nursery. I can't figure out what color to paint the walls. I also have an orange rug that will go in the room. Yellow has been suggested but is not my favorite color...

Oh, I love what you have so far! I am in love with that mobile, but never got it. We did a circus theme in the boys' room as well, and painted the walls a tealish aqua color. I love it. Here are some pics:

Cute stuff! I would recommend a sky blue (pick up a shade from the artwork) as a complementary scheme with the orange.
Otherwise, a neutral like a light gray, taupe or white. In the nursery tour archives, there's a really cute room with gray walls, titled something like "Gray: It's not just for European babies."

Hey Pyjammy, how do you like the breathable bumpers? Do they keep the boys' arms and legs inside?
I just love that room!

I would suggest a light blue from the elephant picture with maybe the tiniest hint of green in it. I would go really light, though, so it doesn't clash w/ the mobile. I think it would contrast w/ the orange rug nicely but not detract from the other busier/brighter stuff going on w/ the decor.

I think sky blue and one gray wall would be super chic!

i like the idea of a light gray.

We have orange with grey and white in the Boy's nursery. Here are a couple of (not so hot) photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mistybushell/3349522700/sizes/m/
The grey is Ethereal White from Sherwin Williams.
(Obviously I have gotten some inspiration from this site!)

we have a dark gray in our baby room, which I love (the room does get a lot of light though). Ralph Lauren indian rhubarb--gray with a hint of green to it. Sets off bright colors nicely. If not Ralph Lauren sweatshirt gray is a gray-blue.
Now you did buy the netto cub 1.0 on overstock, right?

Whoops!

Oooh, I like the gray idea a lot too. Maybe even with the tiniest hint of blue in it? Or maybe not. Hmm.
mere1975 - yes, I do like them a lot. they can't climb on them, but they do keep them somewhat protected. mostly at this point, they're most useful at keeping pacifiers in the crib at night. :)
since the boys love to sleep with their heads wedged in the corners of their cribs, I'm very glad I got the breathable ones.

I would suggest something soothing, like the color featured in Liam's nursery tour (the blue/green/grey color, I believe it was called Beach Glass). I think it would play well with the elements you have (love the elephant print, btw!), and keep the room from feeling too hectic. I also like the sky blue suggestion, if you're going for something brighter.

Eskkimmo, the gray stripes look great with your orange and white (and I have the pendant version of your floor lamp hanging in my kitchen!)

Blue if you want to add a nice accent color, gray if you want it more design-ish. I think gray with orange is beautiful BUT blue would be more cheerful and playful in a baby room. I like modern nurseries (and my daughter's nursery is modern), but you can do modern with bright colors too (example: this nursery in the nursery tour that has blue walls and the bedding & etc are yellow http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/nursery-tours/my-room-little-p-massachusetts-076389 ).

I like the suggestions of grey and light blue.
Both my boys rooms are a dark chocolate brown. I get a lot of crazy looks when I say that. But all their furniture is white, doors and moldings are white too. And I have good light bulbs. I find the brown grounds the room and gives me a change to go crazy with color everywhere else. It also give me the chance to change color schemes at any time (which I have done!) - because pretty much anything (except maybe lots of grey) looks good with brown. Send in more pictures when you are done!

I vote for brown!
If you wanted a lighter brown, there is a great example with blue/orange/green in Max Everly's room in the 2008 color contest:

For a darker chocolate with the same colors (and maybe even the same mobile that you have), see the 2007 color contest winner, Sam's Chocolate Crash Pad:

I look forward to seeing the finished pictures!

Tourquoise, bright but not overpowering. Will set off the bedding, play on the blue elephant in the picture. We used an orangey-yellow (Sherwin Williams' "afternoon") in our spare-room-sometimes-nursery for visiting grandchild. My college age daughter also uses this room when on breaks, so we did it fun but not too babyish. It's the happiest room in the house, and works with every bright color we accent with: pinks, tourquoise, green, you name it. I LOVE it, and now I want to brighten up the rest of the house. Best of all, the new Harmony paint line is VOC-free.
You can bring your items with you to a good paint store, where they can help you pick a color. I usually go with a shade lighter than I think I can handle, and have them paint it on a card for you to see next to your fabric. If you think you need a brighter shade, it's easy for them to go with the next darker shade or two. A good paint specialist will be able to add blue tones, red, whatever if it's still a little off, needs to be richer. It's so much easier for me to pick when I start with a really tangible color like in a fabric or print.
One more thought is to bring the pillowcase to a fabric store, to see it next to many other colors of fabric. This will give you a larger scale view of how it will look with blues, etc. Paint chips drive me a little crazy, since they are so small and never look exactly like the actual color in my experience. Good luck and happy new baby!

Orange and brown is so seventies in a bad sort of shag carpet flashback for me. I'd go with gray or blue. Gray would be more hip, but blue would be really cheerful and cute.

A colour similar to the lightest shade of grass green in the circus picture.
We painted a room in our house this colour, and it is transcendently beautiful -- it glows.
It is a full-spectrum paint from Donald Kaufman, and is beautiful at all hours of the day, changing colour depending on the light, both natural and artificial. In some light it looks yellow, in other light, it looks green. It is lovely to wake up to, and soothing at night time -- it was especially beautiful in full sun. Can't say enough great things about it!
It is Donald Kaufman DKC-45.
Because it is so changeable, I would get a test pot to try it in your space with your lighting conditions.
You can buy sample pots online at www.coxpaint.com
(don't try to reproduce it with colour matching, because it won't work due to the small amounts of many different pigments).

Oops, figured it out (http://www.oompa.com/baby-toys/item/BL0906G/Blabla-Grande-Jungle-Animals-Mobile.html?oompaItem=Blabla_Grande%20Jungle%20Animals%20Mobile).

I thought the exact same thing as mschatelaine's. I read your question looked at your pictures then thought that grass green behind the elephant and other animlas would go great. Its also a color that he can grow into for a few years. Its not soooo baby. Gray is a depressing color to me and once the orange goes out you will be in a gray room...i dont dig it! I also am not a blue color person. I had a yellow walls room with blue growing up.. it switched to a sea foam green in my pre teens. Its not a good choice. Good luck.

some one did a baby room in "salmon" color and it turned out great....an orangish shade.

I would do turquoise for sure. A bright tone, but a light shade. Turquoise and orange look great together! Then I would get a turquoise fitted sheet for the crib and keep the rest of the bedding orange. Dwell makes a couple great ones that you can buy individually: www.dwellstudio.com
If you haven't framed your art yet, might I suggest a white frame with a big white matte? Or maybe the same with a wood frame to match your CUB crib.
Good luck! For more ideas, contact our designer: http://www.ellaandelliot.com/designer.html

I vote blue and orange! Very bright and fun.
Also, those sheets are too cute. Can you tell me where you found them? My best friend is getting ready to have a baby and she is doing animals for her nursery theme. I think they would make a perfect gift.

I feel bright colors will distract the child from subjects you want him to focus on, eg an alphabet chart.
Consider introducing wildlife to the child early. You can get beautiful wildlife posters online. (I prefer to exposed the child to pictures of real animals rather than animated ones, just like I prefer speak normally to a child rather than to coo baby talk. I think it helps the child mature earlier.)

Kelly, love what you're doing. Can you tell me who makes the sheet/pillow case set in the picture.
Thanks and congrats!
