Grace had a question for us.: " Do you know where I can get a large-sized mat for my little boy to play on? At gymboree classes, they said they got it custom-made...can't seem to find any decent-sized mats anywhere on the web except those with alphabet pieces and such which I don't want. - "
Good question Grace! We searched and searched and found that there just aren't too many large sized playmats without giant alphabet letters, but we did find a couple of things that may work.
This playmat from Target is on sale now and can be used inside or outdoors and wipes clean easily. The design looks pretty tame!
A site we found called Backyard Adventures of Iowa also has an ok selection of playmats. One is even in a solid color.
Over at Hip and Little we found a bag that zips open into a playmat in- the best design is currently sold out- after out search for a nice playmat, we understand why!
Finally, Champion Toy Store had a few mats with airplane, sunflower, or ladybug designs (pictured above).
Anyone else out there- please help Grace find a playmat! Let us know if you have one you liked.
Hello,
We covered our daughter's bedroom floor with this custom mat.

It is thicker and far better quality than the ubiquitous alphabet tile mats and made to fit her room perfectly. You can mix and match colors. You can also ask for a free sample of all the colors. It looks great and we were very pleased.
i saw a cute non-slip rug at ikea that had little roads on it for $15. you could also use flor tiles.
We have these:

They are about an inch thick, and at three years old still look new.
We use the Lekplats from Ikea. It's a mere $14.99 and rolls up easily to take from room to room.
oops, here's the link for the Lekplats:

you might check out library supply catalogs like demco.com. some of their rug options intended for children's areas might work, and as you'd expect they've got a big range of book/stuff-shelves.
These are pretty cute from Babies R Us:
