Good Questions:Microwavable Plates

2007-11-15-dishes.jpg

Heather has this question for us: Do microwavable non-breakable plates and bowls exist that I can use for my toddler?

There are so many great melamime dishes out there for kids these days, but that just won't do in the microwave; though you could always heat up the food on another dish and serve it on the melamime.

Well, we found the 6 Piece Feeding Set pictured above on Babywise.com. It just doesn't say the material that they're made of.

Then we headed over to Tupperware. A while back our only association with Tupperware was a vague recollection of our mother heading off to "Tupperware Parties" when we were kids. But then we really needed some good containers for lunch packing and we wound up purchasing a bunch of things from the Tupperware site. A lot of their products can go from freezer to microwave. We found a Divided Dish Set with easy grip handles that is made specifically for children six months and up.

putting plastic in the microwave is such a health hazard!!!!!! heat food on/in a different container and then transfer to a plastic plate.

While I understand the allure of microwaving food in the container that it is going to be served in, I can't help but feel that it's risky to microwave plastic and then serve it to kids. There has been enough debate lately about what is released from the plastic when hit by microwaves that it makes me leary. I don't mean to sound pious or perfect; I have microwaved my kid's food in plastic a few times, but not anymore. I think it's better to nuke the food in small glass bowls and then transfer it to plastic plates and bowls. I know the extra dishes are a pain (believe me, I know), but it's worth it for a little more peace of mind.

We have the Tupperware separated plates and they are great. A bunch of parents we know recommended them highly and we concur. They come with lids, so you can put some things together and take it on the go to the park or restaurant.

I too have stopped microwaving plastic dishes, even if they say they're microwave safe. I bought some Pyrex bowls for my toddler to use, which have taken a couple spills onto the floor and not broken. Otherwise, we use our ceramic everyday dishes with him, and he's been consistently instructed to be careful with them. So far so good!

I usually serve microwaved food on Fiestaware. Its safe to go in the microwave, and pretty durable. Plus, I'm usually sitting right next to my toddler while she's eating, so if she even thinks of throwing a dish on the floor, I'm there to grab it.

We use small Corelle dishes to heat and serve our children's food. They don't break easily and they don't really outgrow them (only in serving size) so we can use them even after the kids are grown and gone.

since the question was about plastic and some of us (despite the guilt trip from everyone else) still do microwave our kids food on plastic--I found these to be amazing:

HI.. we use the Divided Dish Set with Easy-Grip Handle set from Tupperware. It works really well dividing the baby food. Plus it has a lid which has really been great for eating on the road!
