Design Within Reach had some really cute & very modern chairs and a round table last year. The last I saw they were on sale and are no longer on their website, but if you have a local store you may want to check it out. I picked up the chairs from ours..

I too love modern design but kids are rough on everything so I refuse to pay too much. I bought a Wild Zoo Play Table in maple and it was very reasonable and has a nice organic shape (plus my son can't tip the chairs over). I also just bought him some Offi chairs and a ToddleRock rocker and ottoman in brown chenille. They all blend in well with our teak and modern pieces without sacrificing functionality or comfort for him.

we have a solid wood table and chair set from community playthings. i liked the look of it and figured since my daughter's playgroup used this company's furniture, it was built to last!

It looks durable and is on sale, but when I was previously contemplating the Lack side table (My friend uses it for her kids and its only $13) it feels pricey....
