A future aunt sent us this question via email: I am helping to organize a baby shower for my sister-in-law. Does anyone have suggestions for cool shower favors?
They could be funny or useful (like something edible, as opposed to a tchotchke) or at least classy and simple, but not cutesy. And not like the attached picture.

Our favorite shower favor, ever, was a tin of lip balm, personalized on top with a sticker that read 'as soft as Belinda's bum' and the date of the shower - Belinda being the new baby, of course! And while not everyone's friends would think that is funny, a more sedate message would also work. Right now, we have a Beau-Coup wedding shower lip balm in our gym bag, and love it. You can never have enough lip balm! In the same vein, we also like the new trend of personalized mints tins.

We also love the gardening metaphor of these:
•Personalized seed packets
• Egglings
• Magic Wish Beans
• Terra Fuela (also pictured right)
And you can't go wrong with the edible stuff!
• Cupcakes!
• Custom colour and message M&M's. Maybe in a square tin.
• Personalized petits-fours.
Lots of our readers had showers thrown for them and/or threw showers for their friends...share your expertise! What was a big hit, what would you love to get as a shower favor, and if you were throwing a shower today, what would your favors be? help a future aunt out!
The hostess of our shower gave miniature potted flowers. She used them to decorate the tables, and the guests each got to take one when they left. I thought it was a nice un-tchotchke solution.

Little mirrors from boygirlparty are a fab alternative to the traditional. Almost all women I know enjoy a new purse mirror.

I don't like tins or pots of lip balm because often when I'm out, I don't want to stick my dirty hand into it for the application. They're more attractive and scented wonderfully but it's a hard press to get me to use one.

I threw a shower for a friend who wasn't finding out what sex the baby was. We bought a very pink body wash and a very blue body wash (I think they were by Philosophy but I can't remember now) and then bought a bunch of small, empty plastic bottles. We gave out two to each guest, one with pink wash in it one with blue, both with homemade labels. We wrapped them in little bags of tulle and tied with both pink and blue ribbons and gave them out. I wanted something that people would actually use and we thought shower gel was appropriate for a baby shower :)

I made dishtowel apron favors for a baby shower hosted at Sur La Table: http://flickr.com/photos/thefeltmouse/201070636/in/set-72157594339192312/
They were very easy to make and pretty popular with the guests.

There are several on line companies that make fortune cookies with personalized messages. We packaged ours in Chinese take out boxes decorated with the baby's name and a pink ribbon.

Thank you for all the great ideas! Now I'm hoping more family members and friends will get pregnant so I can plan more showers!
