Ideas for My 11 Year Old Boy's Room?
Good Questions

sports090109.jpgQ: I need ideas for fixing up my 11 year old's room. I want it to reflect his taste (sports), my taste (modern), and it has to be functional and affordable. Here's what I have so far: vintage walnut dresser w/mirrror, matching nightstand, steel workbench, and random pieces from IKEA. I was thinking of getting the Malm bed (twin size), but wanted to do something interesting with it. Paint? Decoupage?

I must admit I am not the handiest person, but I can follow directions. I do not want to go to gimmicky because his taste might change and I want this room to grow with him until I can kick him out and take my vintage pieces back!

Do you have any ideas/ pics of boy teen/ 'tween rooms?

No ideas for the bed but for the walls, maybe shadow-boxes could be cool? You could do different ones for different sports and he could help select things for them. Some ticket stubs, collector cards of favorite players, news clippings, etc.

Keep the furniture neutral, it'll help if he grows out of any of the decor. some ideas:
-Large framed posters (maybe even vintage) of fav sports.

-Wall stencil in one color of soccer field/ baseball diamond or whichever sport he likes best. This gave me that idea http://www.potterybarnkids.com/room/rom/romboy/romboyapl/index.cfm

-Wall Storage for baseball bats like http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/rak800/index.cfm?pkey=rromboykssp

-bins for balls http://www.landofnod.com/family.aspx?c=106&f=838&fromLocation=WhatsNew&l=173

-i still like the use of skateboard decks for shelves and wheels for coat hooks

-his own open locker area, to hang uniform etc. http://www.xpblocker.com/openaccesslockers-a-237.html
they are pricey so I wonder if you could diy something? Maybe IKEA cabinet and paint it with metallic paint?

I really like and appreciate the comments that have come in so far. My son changed his mind (typical!) and we bought a basic bed frame from IKEA, but the room ideas are great. I feel I can do them, stay within my budget, and appeal to the both of us. I am also considering wall decals (there was a recent post on apartment therapy). Thanks for all the tips!
