Reapplying Wall Decals
Good Questions

2010-02-gqdecals_sm.jpg

Q: I recently removed some wall clings from my daughter's nursery when moving. Unfortunately, I can't get them to stick again to her new walls. I live in a 1930's Spanish Bungalow and don't want to damage the plaster walls. Do you know of an adhesive that I can use to safely re-cling these stickers to the wall?

You could try liquid starch (it comes in a bottle in the laundry detergent/ironing section at the store). It's used to attach fabric to the walls, and is removable/washable.

I used wallpaper paste (pre-mixed in a tube) for some of our stickers that wouldn't stay put, worked like a charm!

I think they are generally one-time use, but it seems like you could use the above suggestions and then they will work again and again!

I learned a trick from my MIL, a veteran teacher. Hot glue works great to stick things to walls, and doesn't peel paint off, either! I know, it's shocking. ;-) It will hold a long time (years, she wouldn't remove her standard stuff from year to year) and even works on raw brick, which I had in my first classroom. You can always test it on the inside of a closet if you don't believe me. :)

I second the hot glue. I used it once to put up a wallpaper border in a house I was renting. It just peeled right down when we moved. The only thing is that it dries to quickly that it is usually bumpy. You may need a friend to help you do things quickly and you'll need to know exactly where everything is going!

Thank you so much for the tips! I will definitely be testing out the hot glue and starch, both of which I use in my classroom all of the time. I didn't even think to try those.
