Touch or Dimmer Lamps for the Nursery
Good Questions

2009-12-gqtouchlamp.jpg

Q: I am working on a nursery for my first baby and lots of articles advise parents to buy touch lamps or lamps with dimmer capabilities for the nursery - that way you can check in on baby without waking him. Do you know of any nursery lamps with this feature? Better yet - stylish and affordable?

We got this lamp from IKEA - it is dim and red, so it doesn't disturb our twins, and your eyes don't have to adjust. We've used it since they were born 20 months ago and it's never woken a baby up, or kept a baby up when we used it as a nightlight for a while.

Oh, and it is crazy cheap.

I got three tabletop faux tortise shell touch lamps from Target. They were about $12.99 each but I got them on clearance for like $9

You can buy a dimmer switch (at a hardware store) and use any lamp...just gotta make sure all of the cords are safely out of the way.

I didn't have a good place for a lamp, so I used a small battery-powered touch light (the cheap white plastic variety). I think it was $5-$10 for two of them. I put one right inside the door, and the other on the dresser/changing table for middle-of-the-night changing. Now I've put them away until we need them again someday.

I hold my blackberry or iphone just below the bumper so it casts a glow but isn't that bright.

We installed a dimmer switch for the overhead light. Babies and lamps and cords don't mix well once baby can crawl (and that happens so soon!). Also, by using a dimmer on the overhead light, you can turn it on as you walk in the door, instead of having to cross the room in the dark to turn on the lamp. And it casts its light fairly evenly around the room, whereas a lamp by the rocking chair, say, may not shine enough light for you to see well over by the crib.

I purchased this set of two brushed nickel table lamps and have them in my bedroom (where my daughter sleeps). They are fantastic! they have 3 settings (very low, medium, and bright), are modern/stylish, go with everything and are good enough to use as your bedroom night table lights. Best of all - $20!

I also have the BB&Beyond ones...they really are great. I have one in the nursery and one in my daughter's room as a nightlight.

I got the small Tube Top lamp from Room & Board. Not cheap, but very functional in several great colors and it will last many years (I hope!).

We installed a dimmer on the light switch. However, we just bought the cutest little LED night light from Target. They are touch on and off and they come in mushroom or blue bird. So cute!

I got this lamp at IKEA for my nursery. I love the bright colors and the dimmer switch is perfect for a nursery. The price was pretty good too!

Get either one. We didn't have a dimmer or a touch and everytime our daughter woke up and we turned on the light it would wake both or us up.

Got the little bird night light in Target and it works great! We can still see, but she does not wake up. http://www.target.com/Circo-LED-Scandi-Night-Light/dp/B001FSGRVW/sr=1-10/qid=1259941785/ref=sr_1_10/175-4523416-5155030?ie=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3Anight%20light&page=1

we just replaced the regular overhead light switch with a dimmer. 10 minute is all it took, and about $6 from the hardware store for the dimmer. We don't have a surface for a lamp, so the overhead dimmer works perfectly.

I second AmberM's suggestion of cheap touch lights.
