Q:I have a 2.5 year old boy, and a second child on the way. I'd like to move my son out of the crib before the second one comes home, so he doesn't feel like he's losing his crib to his sibling. I plan to start with just a mattress on the floor, but eventually he's going to need a real bed. I thought about bunk beds, but he's going to be too little to use them for a long time....
Where Can I Find a Trundle Bed?

The ceiling isn't too high either, so it might get snug when he's a teenager.
I grew up with a trundle bed. It was wonderful, because it worked for sleepovers and didn't take up a lot of space. Because it popped up to full height, when it is pushed up against the primary bed, it makes a short king size bed. My husband and I use it now, when we visit my parents.
Where can I find a decent quality, attractive, but not ridiculously expensive trundle bed? As a back up, do any readers have good suggestions for a plan B, if trundles turn out to be to esoteric?

We have a trundle under our Ikea day bed. They used to make a few styles with trundles - as always, reasonably priced - and not sure what they have now, but worth a look.

We have a trundle that we Ikea-hacked using an Aspelund under-the-bed storage box. It was only $50, plus the cost of getting a piece of foam custom cut and covered for the mattress (about $200). Much cheaper than the trundle beds we found on the market.

Just something to consider... it might be easier to have a low trundle for when your son is older and having sleepovers, my husband informs me that boys never like to share a bed- being raised with only sisters I don't know how true that is, but something to think about. A low bed would also keep your son lower to the ground while he is young.

We have the Hemnes trundle in my son's room, which doubles as a guest room. It's very roomy and comfortable, and I love the drawers!

The Ikea Hemnes trundle bed does pop up to make (I think) a queen sized bed. It also has the storage drawers. I'm hoping Ikea still has this model when the time comes for our little guy to move out of his crib.

Pottery Barn Kids have a couple trundles -- athough not the pop-up kind.

At Costco on Tuesday I saw a dark blue-painted wood one that was refreshingly basic and modern for Costco. I can't speak to the quality, but it looked solid and the price was right. It had a high headboard...kind of fun!

The Ikea Hemnes does not pop up, but when it's pulled out, both beds are on the same level.

We have the Maxtrix bed with trundle. It doesn't pop up but it's a nice, sturdy, well-made bed. We don't have all the bells and whistles, just the basic bed (I don't think we need a SLIDE in our kids' room! http://www.maxtrixkids.com/beds.html
