Good Questions:Nurseryworks Rockers?

2008-02-07-storytime rocker.jpg
Julia needs your help!

Now that a few online stores are offering the Nurseryworks rockers at 40% off, I'm seriously considering one. But no local stores in my area have them in stock to test them out for comfort. I'm wondering if you or any of your readers have any feedback on how comfortable the chairs are, and particularly the Storytime rocker. I'll be nursing and therefore sitting in it ALOT.

Thanks!
-Julia

We ourselves haven't tried the rocker, but we did find a brief review in the comments section over at baby gadget.

Readers- tell us if you have the Storytime Rocker!

Julia,

We have the Sleepytime by Nurseryworks and love it. You can see it in our house tour. It is not as wide, but has a higher back compared to the Storytime. You want something to rest your head on - I often would fall asleep nursing.

They carry it at Giggle stores around the city so you might be able to try it out there.

I tried the sleepytime rocker at a local store here in Chicago - (Grow on Division/Damen). I found it to be very comfortable. The arm rests were at a good height, the back came up just high enough to rest your head and it comes with a lower lumbar, accent pillow.

The only negative I will note, is the rocking motion was not smooth. It sort felt like a bump in the road. I found it annoying enough not to buy it. But my friend decided to purchase it, it didn't bother her as much.

Hope that's helpful!

I just bought the storytime rocker on sale last week for my 2 year old's room and think it is great. I do not think I would recommend it for nursing though. I spent so much time nursing in our glider that I really appreciated the extra cushion. The storytime rocker is comfortable, but not very cushiony. Also, like Sara Kate said, it has a fairly low back, so if you choose this, go with the sleepytime instead of the storytime.

I really wanted to buy the nurseryworks storytime rocker for my soon to be born son, becuase I love the design and was able to find it at a local store on sale. But, alas, it wasn't for me. Previous poster was right about the rocking motion not being smooth --I also found that the arms weren't at a good height for nursing for me (I'm 5'3), the back was too low for resting and compared to a Dutalier nursing chair (which is admittedly ugly) it was not comfortable at all. So, I had to swallow my design pride and buy an ugly Dutalier nursing chair which felt crazy comfortable and glides beautifully.

both the nurseryworks STORYTIME and SLEEPYTIME rockers the coordinating PERCH stool are all on sale at http://www.growmodern.com . the sale ends March 31 - many fabrics options are starting to sell out.

while you could use either rocker for whatever your needs are, the SLEEPYTIME rocker was designed with Mom in mind - for nursing and rocking baby to sleep. the STORYTIME, however, is built to hold both parent child, for rocking reading stories, etc.

They have them available for trial at moderntots in DUMBO. And I must say they are quite comfy!

Julia,
Kudos on your NURSING your little one. AWESOME!

You must, must, must try them out. Since you will be using it a lot, plus nursing can be very challenging and there's nothing more discouraging than nursing in an uncomfortable piece of furniture to keep you from nursing your baby.

I woudl even sugguest to wait until your baby is born, take the baby with you to the store with the rocker that you have in mind, and try it out with your baby...NO ONE will mind your doing so, it is an important step...both YOU & YOUR BABY have to agree with the rocker; it should suit you both!

Best.

i JSUT got my sleepytime rocker, and let me tell you it is sooooo cute. but honestly, no it is not comfortable. it is really, really stiff and you don't sink into it at all. eveeryne who tries it grimaces when they sit in it and then comments on how great it looks. hopefully it will loosen up with some wear. the shape is great, you can rest your head and arms, but it is like wood with a thin layer of foam. nothing like the gliders or rockers you normally sit in. but it looks great. i added a few down pillows....

I was faced with the same questions about a month ago when I decided between the Storytime and Sleepytime rocker.

We ended up purchasing the Storytime rocker (from moderntots) because our main goal was to have a good reading chair for our two girls for years to come.

With that said, I plan on using the rocker as a nursing chair when babe #2 is born and I think it will work fine. The one thing you'll need if you're at all vertically challenged (I'm 5'1) is a good sized pillow for back support.

It's such a beautiful chair though - here's a pic of ours (we went with ecru microsuede): Rocker

When I was in the market in November for a rocker, I tested out the Nurseryworks Sleepytime rocker at a local baby store. I can't speak for the Storytime rocker, but I just didn't think the Sleepytime chair was that comfortable, and assume the Storytime would be similar in feel. At the same time, I also tested the Monte Luca glider and liked it much more. Since they were side by side in the store, it was a good comparison and I opted to buy the Monte. The store employees also told me that the Monte had been much more popular among customers.

Julia - I hope the comments here have been helpful. I was in the market too, but decided not to get any rocker/glider because we are tight on space. I just used our sofa, and loved having a support pillow for the baby. The main point is for you to be comfortable, whether rocking or not. Good luck!

I'm glad others have posted their impressions, I was similarly disappointed. I'm 5'8" and found the headrest to be much too low, and the lumbar support to be non-existent.

For a second baby, I'm going to suck it up and get a glider. Two years of nursing in an uncomfortable chair is NOT WORTH the cuteness.

I too am kind of looking for the same thing, reviews on the comfort of the storytime rocker. So I apologize my comment may not be of much help.

However, in buying my first rocking chair for my first baby, I found that trying them out was essential. Some chairs looked comfortable and were absolutely terrible the second you sat on them. I ended up buying the Pottery Barn Dreamtime Rocking chair at a local discount store. I found it was the right amount of firmness and comfort. My primary need for it was nursing and you will definitely need one that is high enough to rest your head/neck on. I found I needed a long short pillow for lumber support on it and basically anywhere I nursed. But that can easily be added to any rocker you choose.

I'm now looking to get the Nurseryworks Storytime rocker because I have a second baby and would like to be able to sit with them both on one rocking chair to read stories and my 3 year old daughter doesn't quite fit in the PB rocker with me. I hope people post more reviews on them here since I can't try it out locally either. Thanks.

I just received my Sleepytime rocker and am very disappointed! I tried the the Storytime rocker at the store and it seemed ok. I was excited the Sleepytime rocker had a taller back and the lady at the store said you could rest your head on it. It's so super cute but miserable to sit in. We tried to return it but were informed it's a non-returnable item. What I hate: back is too low, arm rests too low, doesn't really rock, very stiff.. really no comfort at all. For now I guess it will look nice! If anyone is interested in it, or has questions feel free to email me: sdurt@hotmail.com

I LOVE my Nurseryworks Sleepytime rocker (dark wood with ecru microsuede). It was $650 on sale--shop around online. It's comfortable but firm. The rocking motion isn't bombastic, but you get a nice back and forth with a slight foot push. The seat height is perfect (I'm 5'7'', hubby is 6'1'')--no falling into the chair or struggle to get up. The back isn't tall enough to put my head straight back like a car seat, but that wouldn't keep me from resting/sleeping in the chair. The lumbar pillow is nice, but not so big you can't add another decorative or head support pillow.

If you are looking for a very cushy rocker with gliding action, this isn't your chair. If design is important and you prefer something more firm, man are you in business. Big enough for a parent/grandparent, baby and sibling during story time and good-looking enough for any room in the house.

DO NOT BUY anything Nurseryworks! It is not what it's cracked up to be! I purchased the goodnight glider on sale for $700 (still a lot of money for us!), I was very excited about this; it feels wonderful and looks cool... until I sat in it a couple times and started noticing marks all over it that wouldn't go away! They claim that their fabrics are stain resistant/scotch-guarded, yet a drop of water doesn't go away - ever! It makes no sense. My glider is made out of the twill in mocha, I have no idea how the suede is.

I contacted them, sent them photos, and they rejected my complaint, basically calling me a liar, saying I sat in it with oils and lotions on. Well I didn't, only once with damp hair, once I left a slightly damp towel on it, and a couple drops of water from my skin after showering, and it is stained, marked up all over the place...I even tested a piece to make sure I wasn't crazy with a slightly damp sponge and the stain still has not gone away!!!! They tell me to use a little water to clean any stains, yet water is staining it? My barely used glider looks like crap now and our baby isn't even here yet. I cannot imagine how it will look from breastfeeding, or after we have a kid running around. Horrible! Warning, I've seen another post with bad reviews for Nurseryworks.

Just avoid Nurseryworks: Expect no customer service: We waited over 5 months for our delivery and than got an overpriced product of lousy quality: There are many, many better options available. Actually: any other option is better.
