In our home, we use a simple basket filled with small slips of recycled paper for family members to write down what they're thankful for on any given day. Then we fold them up and don't read them again until New Years Day each year. Thanksgiving would also be a great time to start this tradition in your family...
All you need is a large enough vessel for all of your notes throughout the year, some little cut up pieces of leftover scrap paper, and toss a couple of pens in there too to make it easy for yourselves.
Remember to write down the small, everyday stuff as well as the larger celebrations and events in your life. It's so much fun to go through them at the end of the year, and always encouraging to family members. And...it's sometimes surprising to remember the smaller things like a good meal (that's usually in there quite a few times for us!), or a sun shower. We often find a few notes from house guests as well which is always a nice surprise.
I'm sure you craftier folk will come up with a better vessel than a basket, but it's what's inside that counts! Consider starting a gratitude basket this Thanksgiving or New Years.

Thanks for this wonderful idea! For years our family has written what we're thankful for on strips of colorful paper. As Chrsitmas approaches, we then make them into paper chains to drape on our Xmas tree. My kids love to look at what they wrote in years past. Thanks for giving us another tradition!

We also have a similar family tradition, but I did it in the form of a Thanksgiving garland with leaves saying what we are thankful for. I put a tutorial on my site showing you how easy it is to make the garland. http://www.simplymodernmom.com/2009/11/thanksgiving-garland/
