Green Ideas: Drawer Organizers

2008_02_04_drawer org.jpg

We all have a junk drawer (or two) and your kids probably have junk stashed away somewhere as well - arts and craft supplies, small toy collections, etc. Bella Dia has devised a super simple way to tame the clutter using supplies you would normally throw away.

Look around for small paper boxes of various sizes - things you would normally recycle or throw away - she's used a butter box, tea box, half a pasta box. Next, measure the height of your drawers and cut the boxes accordingly. Voila!

You could also get fancy by covering the boxes with decorative paper or decoupage. See Bella Dia's project and her wonderful blog here.

It's amazing how what so many things that my mom did to 'save money' when I was growing up (and thought were embarrassing at the time) are now considered considered green and, increasingly 'chic'

I still have a pencil container made out of a cream of wheat box from almost 30 years ago -- I would how today's boxes, which seem more flimsy will stand the test of time?

Love it! And here we all thought the Container Store had all the great stuff. I just cut the top off an empty Weetabix box, and am starting to organize.

So funny - just last night I was putting my pens away in my empty ziplock box/pencil box, and I thought: Man, what would those design geeks at AT think. I take back my assumption and pat myself on the back for my own foresight! :-)

This is a very good idea. I have applied the same principal in one of my drawers that holds all the nick-nacks in the kitchen and I wanted separate boxes that fit. I had some clear laminated sheets - which I cut into boxes without top - the box holds together with superglue which is transparent, fittin perfectly and tightly my drawer. and the drawer looks so neat with clear boxes - so easy to make.

...and don't forget the appeal and sturdiness of empty tuna cans for use as drawer organizers.
