If you're not into washing your plastic sandwich bags, ReUsies are another good option. A couple of Seattle moms started the company when they realized just how many plastic bags their families went through every week.

The ReUsies are made of cotton and lined with water-resistant nylon. They come in snack and sandwich sizes, and what can we say- the selection of prints are just really cute- cute enough to motivate us to leave those plastic bags behind for good!
They can be washed in the dishwasher, washer/dryer, or hand washed to increase their life span.

this is a genius idea! would it work with oil cloth too, or does that leech something nasty into food?

Cute, but I've just gone old school and returned to using tin foil for most things (like food on the go). Simple and recyclable.
And for stuff stored in the fridge (like leftovers) -- small glass pyrex w/lids, sold at Target. (This works better than tin foil b/c if we can't see what's inside, we tend to accidentally let it rot and not eat it.)
(I don't know, now someone will tell me that my tin foil use is just as bad as plastic, but to me it seems better for some reason.) ??

Modern "oil cloth" is actually PVC. It shouldn't come into contact with food (or children, or the environment, etc.). Nasty, nasty leaching stuff.

baumgak, In my area tin foil is not recyclable so is no good.
JudiAU - I made a lunch sack out of modern oilcloth. My food doesn't touch it (except for apples or the like) do you think it is still leaching stuff into my food or to me?

baumgak - The manufacturing of tinfoil creates red, toxic mud. :( Perhaps you could get some stainless steel reusable food containers, like the lunchbots featured here a few days ago.

There are lots of Etsy shops that sell these, too. Here's one of my favorites: greengoosebags.etsy.com
