Make a Green Resolution This Year

2010-01-greenres.jpgGet organized, eat better, exercise - one or more of these is probably on your resolutions list for the coming year, right? How about adding a green resolution? Commit to something you've been considering or follow through on something you've only done half-heartedly (like keep those reusable bags in your bag or trunk instead of your closet). What's our green resolution you ask?

Our own green resolution this year is about packaging - all the stuff surrounding the things we buy. The goal is to seek out things with less and less harmful packaging. From the things we order online (we like Amazon's Frustration-Free Packaging initiative for example) to the things we buy in stores (we're finally going to stand up to the rigid bagel lady who insists on putting a bagel we're going to eat right away in a paper bag) and, maybe the hardest, a reevaluation of the places we order takeout food from (and the the excessive amounts of plastic packaging that accompany it.)

What's your green resolution this year? (Looking for ideas? Greenwala has some ideas.)

Always taking drycleaning bags to be recycled! Sometimes we get lazy & they go in the trash... but we are going to work harder at that!

sweet! i'm doing 'the compact' which is, basically, buying nothing new except (obviously) food, medication and other health/hygiene necessities, and personal exceptions. my exceptions are basic socks/undies, batteries and candles.

items we need can be bought used, made ourselves, borrowed, bartered, etc. eight days in . . . it's really fun! it makes me stop and think about whether i really need something and how urgent that 'need' is. i think it will also be interesting to see what comes up that i hadn't considered (what will cause me to buy new).

i did it once before, for a month. this time, i've committed to the whole year.
