Snappi Diaper Fasteners

082609-snappi-1.jpgOh, how we wish we'd known about Snappis years ago when we first started cloth diapering. We opted for flat diapers because they're much less expensive than those with fancy built-in fasteners, but the pins drove us to distraction and back again. Enter the Snappi... cheap, easy to use, and kinda cute, to boot.

082609-snappi-2.jpgThe Snappi diaper fastener is made from a stretchable non-toxic material, which is T-shaped with grips on each end. These grips hook into the diaper fabric to ensure a snug-fitting diaper with enough natural movement for the baby. We weren't sure how well it works, but found this rave review at Cool Tools (which also warns against inferior knock-offs).

Snappis are also available in toddler size.

Available in a variety of colors at Amazon. Prices start at $1.69 per fastener.

We've been using these for months and they work great.

I've used these with my 1 year old since she was born, and they work great, no problems, and very quick and easy. Perfect for a squirming baby and groggy late-night changes. I assumed everyone using cloth prefolds would be using these by now!

One caveat, though--I gave some to a friend, and she thought they were too small and/or might be pressing uncomfortably on her infant son's boy bits. I can't say that I understand where she's coming from--it really shouldn't be pressing down in any way, and the diaper itself provides lots of cushion between sensitive parts and the snappi, and I know lots of people with baby boys who use these--but anyway that was one person's experience.

I used these with my newborn for the first 5 months when I used cloth diapers and diaper covers. Very easy to use and one lasted me for the entire 5 months. A great option for when not using all-in-one diapers.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these. Not sure how my toddler would like them now, but before he could pull his own diapers off, they were great!

These are great. They also come in a new larger "toddler" size for when baby gets bigger.

We use snappis too and there are no issues with the boy bits getting squished! I have 3 and they are all going strong after 1 year's use.

I tried these and actually cut myself pretty bad with them on the first try! After that I didn't want to use them on my baby because they are sooooo sharp! And yes, it was the "real" Snappi. I would much rather just use a fitted cover!

i'm with the previous poster. snappis are scary. my pediatrician hates them, too.

I found out about these with my second. I love them a whole lot. They really cut down on the washing of covers, because they hold the poop in the diaper better than a standard pre-fold fold. They are nice in the summer because you can go sans cover, the snappi holds the cloth pre-fold on nicely. We don't go out and about or anything, but around the house and out in the yard. We have never had any problem with them being too sharp. My biggest offender of baby diaper injuries is velcro on the closures of covers. That is much more dangerous than Snappi's.

I tore a hole into a cutesy blanket when I tossed one into my diaper bag, but other than that, I have no complaints. I've been using them on and off for over a year with prefolds.
No squished boy parts, either! :)
Oh, and just for the record, the company warns you never to use a snappi without a cover because they're obviously visciously sharp if not handled correctly.
Also, I'd suggest buying them from a mom-owned diapering store (online or off) to support a small business instead of giant amazon.

tried these with our babe, but the sharp factor scared us off using them. that, and, we found that just tri-folding the cloth diaper and laying it in the diaper cover works well enough (there was more laundry initially when the cover would get hit, but that has tapered off with time).

Wait, people are concerned about sharpness of snappis - does no one remember that the alternative is GIANT SAFETY PINS?? I can recall more than one diaper pin injury back in my babysitting days. And not just to me, the sitter. So far nary a scratch from the snappis. The newspaper fold is great but sometimes that just doesn't cut it. I use an angel wing fold for my son at night because he's a side sleeper and needs absorbency at the hips. You need a pin or snappi for that. Also for holding in the liquidy pre-solids poops as LSwanson says.
