Name: Hank & Dexter
Age: 2 ½ (twins)
Location: Providence, Rhode Island

Twins Hank & Dexter’s wonderfully unique nursery combines dark elements — like the black animal silhouettes on the wall that were hand-painted by their mom, Jen — with lots of bright, playful accessories to create an exciting and memorable space.

Their bedroom is small for a pair of growing boys, so their parents wisely set up an entire upstairs hideaway that includes a cowboy-themed reading nook and nautical bathroom. In fact their whole house, which we toured on Apartment Therapy Boston and peeked at here on Ohdeedoh is full of kid-friendly touches that never sacrifice adult style. Jen has created a space that includes all of the things little boys love: adventure, fun, and — even though they may not appreciate it yet — comfortable sophistication.

Ohdeedoh Survey:

Inspiration: I think of the style as 'vintage boyhood.'

Favorite Element: The marionette collection, even though the boys are still too young to play with them. My grandma gave most of them to me as a kid and friends have added to the collection over the years.

Biggest Challenge: Making space for two boys in one smallish room with a tiny closet. It helps that there is a bathroom just for them where we keep most of their clothes.

Proudest DIY: The mural. It took me a long time to paint it, but I kept reminding myself that the boys will remember this room all their lives.

Biggest Indulgence: The time spent painting the mural.

Best advice: Don't spend a lot on new things for a nursery, especially on anything that will quickly be outgrown. Most second-hand things can be washed and sanitized.

Resources:
Cribs: One hand-me down, one bought from Babies 'R Us to coordinate with it.
Large rocker: An antique refinished and given by the boys' grandparents.
Small rocker and chairs, chalk board, ship print: antique stores
Carousel shelf (painted by Jen), white corner shelf, globe: thrift stores
Bird mobile: eBay

Lovely room. I would never have the patience or talent to paint TWO of those murals. I'd probably just buy this:

this reminds me a lot of my dad's childhood room (which, when i was a kid in the 80s, belonged to my then-teenage uncles and it was still totally 60s) - mostly the dark wood, plaid curtains and the ship painting.

i think it's so great that you put that time into the murals. you're right that they'll always remember the room, and the love you put into it.
