Dreadlock Style Shag Rugs
Good Questions

2009-11-GQ-rug_sm.jpgQ: Help! We recently bought a Crate and Barrel "pebbles" shag rug from Craigslist to take the chill off our hardwood floors this winter and it's quickly become the heart and soul of the house. Sadly, the rug is no longer available at C&B. I'm trying desperately to find similar, affordable rugs for our kid's room and am having a hard time. While shag wool rugs abound, it's the matted "dreadlock" style as opposed to the fluffy "flokati" style that we're seeking. Any tips on where I can find something affordable?

We love our Quinn Felted Shag rug from Pottery Barn. Everyone who comes over steps on it and sighs. We bought a thick carpet pad (not a rug pad but actual high-end carpet pad yardage from a carpet store) and that makes it amazing! That is a great trick btw to elevate any old rug to the next level...

I bought the West Elm version of PB's felted shag rug. It shed like the dickens. Huge tufts of felted wool would peel off and roll down the hallway like tumbleweed. My local West Elm let me return it. WHEW!
Point: if it's still available, don't go that route!

Yup, you are looking for a "felted wool" rug to achieve that "dreadlock " style you mention. The above posts are good (West Elm)

But how do you stop the terrible shedding of your rug--or do you just live with it? We had one from C&B and returned it for a shag rug because the little shedding bunnies were everywhere--my vacuum had become a permanent fixture in the living room!

I've been looking for a rug lately too and have been scouring every Homegoods store in NH and Northern Mass and I've seen a bunch of the rugs you're looking for. Maybe you'll have luck at a Homegoods near you?

I have seen them a few times at HomeGoods in a few different colors. Only thing bad about HG is that selection varies... good luck!

Sounds to me like she's NOT looking for the dreadlock style - she's seeking something fluffier...

I found this GREAT rug shop in downtown L.A.'s garment district. They have this rug in TONS of colors and sizes from tini tiny floor mats to room size rugs. I bought my daughter's rug that is probably very similar to what you are looking for and it cost $65 for 5'x7'. I think it's a great deal. If you message me I can send you the address...
