Radiator Roundup

Is your heat on? Ours is and even though our son is a few months away from crawling we're already eyeing our radiators and pipes and hoping that never the twain shall meet.

The above photo is one we bookmarked a while ago at Ikea Hacker. The owner used an Lack shelf and Hol storage cube (no longer listed online) from Ikea to mostly cover their radiator (not low enough to the ground to prevent burns of little fingers however). But we like the general idea of inexpensive parts combined with some DIY savvy.

Do you remember this room? It won a prize in our storage contest this spring. Not only do we love the wealth of storage here, but we love that the built-in unit provides coverage for a steam radiator. Read more about it here.

Do you have a resource or idea for babyproofing radiators? We'd love to hear about it in the comments.

We never needed to babyproof the radiator -- it doesn't get hot enough to burn (unless you let the water and steam out). However, since it does get pretty warm, you can use it to teach the concepts of "hot" and "don't touch", which is what we did with our son.

I don't know of a single home here in Europe with young children and babies that has babyproofed radiators, and yet no one I know has ever had children who suffered any burnsfrom the radiators.

We have our radiator covered as you can see here... http://www.flickr.com/photos/cathinca/2981435762/in/set-72157606365197003/ but not because of the heat, since ours doesn't get really hot. But the radiators a very old and have sharp edges, where a toddler can get hurt really bad.

My parents' home had radiators, but they never had covers. The only accident that ever happened was my older brother getting stuck between the radiator and the wall while playing hide and seek. That was an interesting situation.
