High/Low: Alex v. Gulliver

Do you like the high-end look of the Alex crib by ducduc but can't afford the $985 price tag? If you're relatively handy, we've got a solution for you.

On the low end, try this hack of the IKEA Gulliver crib, a popular option among Ohdeedoh readers.

You'll need the following tools and materials:
- IKEA Gulliver Crib, 1 (all hardware included)
- 1/4' birch veneer plywood, 2 sheets
- 1/2' metal screw plugs, 8
- table saw (optional, your local home improvement store can cut to size)
- drill
- 1/2' drill bit
- wood glue
- sand paper and wood filler (optional)
- paint brush, primer and paint
- pencil

You'll need to cut your plywood sheets into four pieces and affix to ends of Gulliver crib. Measurements and detailed instructions are available here.

What is the changing table on top of the crib?

Is it true that Ikea cribs aren't standard size though? That you must use Ikea linens?
Can anyone answer?

I have the Ikea Gulliver crib (which I love) and my standard bumper and crib sheets fit nicely. I have sheets from pottery barn, dwell, and babiesrus. In addition you can use any brand crib mattress with Ikea cribs. I believe the changing table is a rail rider changing table.

I love what they have done to it!

I saw on Ikea Sweden web site they are going to have the Gulliver crib in wood(I think pine not stain with a natural varnish). Super nice!

Anyway where do you get those rail rider changing table?

For those of you inquiring about the changing table, that item is actually handmade as well. I can't seem to find instructions on the website, but if you browse the all the photos, you'll find a comment about how the changing table was made from a $10 piece of MDF and $30 changing table. Not too shabby!

I bet if you wanted instructions, you could email the maker directly or post a comment on his blog.

i did try my hand at posting the instructions on instructables.com. here is the link - http://www.instructables.com/id/SR1OJP2F7AVJ94K/ . you will need longer screws than what ikea supplies, these can be picked up at a local hardware store.

as for the changing table on top, super easy to make. i simply constructed a rectangular 'tray' for a change table mattress. then put little feet on the bottom that keep the tray from moving around on top of the rails. i drilled holes in the side of the tray for the mattress belt to loop through.
