Polly's Happy Place
Nursery Tour

112409-polly-3.jpgName: Polly
Age: 16 months
Location: Madison, Wisconsin

Hot on the heels of our Small Kids, Big Color contest comes Polly's room, which beautifully illustrates how a white backdrop serves as a perfect foil for lively color. Polly's mom, Katie, found her inspiration in a set of Ida Pearle alphabet cards, using them as a palette for repainting all the hand-me-down furniture in the room. The result is fresh and bright, yet still wonderfully restful.

Nursery Tour: Norah's Sweet and Sunny Nursery

2009-11-norah_sm.jpg

Name: Norah
Age: 4 months
Location: Utah

Norah's mom Caroline says she smiles every time she walks by this room and we can certainly see why. The aquas, yellows, reds, oranges and pinks manage to be both vivid and soothing at the same time to create a feeling of warmth and calm.

Mini Tour: Dylan's Teeny-Tiny Thunderdome

Two kids enter. All kids have fun! (Actually, it's just one kid in this case, but we couldn't resist that opener.) Dylan's fabulous room (aka "The Thunderdome") answers two questions: How can you create a beautifully uncluttered nursery in a 9x12' room? And how can rockstar flames be incorporated tastefully into baby decor?

Nursery Tour: Nina's Bright Vintage Room

102909dresser1.jpg

Name: Nina
Age: One month
Location: Montreal

Mom Marie was initially inspired by the turquoise color of an old bathroom cabinet she found at a flea market, and the rest of the room took off from there. She threw in a bunch of toys passed down from grandmothers and parents, and created a room that exudes character.

Mini Tour: Miles and Andrew's Bright and Airy Space

Here's a wonderful space to rev up your engines for our Small Kids, Big Color contest. This room is a classic example of an instance where, if you were to be presented with just the fabric swatches and paint chips that went into it, you could never visualize it all working -- but then magically it does!

Ava's Colorful, Handmade Haven
Kids Room Tour

101209-Ava-1a.jpg

Ava's mom, Joanna, is an interior designer who firmly believes that, when it comes to kids' rooms, the only color rule is that there are no rules. She gave us a tour of Ava's beautiful room, which features handmade items galore, and told us how it evolved from a white room that "looked a bit like a hospital" to the marvelous space that it is now.

Ozzy's Bright Safari
Nursery Tour

IMG_5464.jpg

Name: Ozzy
Age: 18 months
Location: Providence, Rhode Island

Ozzy’s Mom, Greer, never expected his nursery to become her favorite room in their house. In fact, she never expected to live in the house at all. She bought it to renovate and flip, but ended up moving in, starting a family, and creating a bright and colorful nursery complete with wonderful wall-sized animals that she designed and painted herself just 2 weeks before Ozzy was born.

Oliver is barely two years old, but he’s already lived in three different bedrooms on two different sides of the country. He just moved out of this room (his second) and even though it came together amidst some chaos and compromise and he only lived there for a year, it holds a ton of wonderful memories that we want to hold on to forever.

Nursery Tour: No Gray Skies for Mallory Gray

2009-09-rhoney.jpg

Name: Mallory Gray
Age: 2 months old
Location: Hickory, NC

Often parents choose yellow when creating a nursery without knowing if they're having a boy or a girl and it can feel like a compromise, but here a buttery yellow paired with gray, bright white and rich woods results in a sophisticated and playful space where yellow is the star.

Mini Tour: A Shared Gender-Neutral Space

As anyone with more than one child can tell you, when you add more children to your family, organizing who sleeps where can turn into an ad hoc affair. We caught this room -- shared by Jeremiah (2.5 years) and Mia (2 months) -- in the middle of a makeover, and we were impressed at how gracefully it's transitioning from one to two occupants.

According to mom Mandana this nursery was inspired by the original Casalino orange chair from her own childhood and designed to be gender-neutral. The vibe they went for was "modern, minimalist, clean and happy." Mission accomplished.
