Hot or Not: Kitty

HOTNOT-kittyengles.jpgAvailable at the Marcia Woods Gallery, Mary Engel's "Kitty" is quite a conversation starter.

Voting and more info, below the jump...

Kitty, 2008, is a mixed media piece. It reminds us of that episode of "Just Shoot Me" where the mail room guy, Kevin, gives Nina a gift of a big grasshopper made out of a bunch of little grasshoppers -- but in a good way.
Yes? No? What do you think?

Ew too. That's a disturbing cat. I don't like the missing face, sorry. I have three furbabies, and to me, that cat is too much.

I can't figure out what disturbs me about this, but there is something that makes me uneasy.

That is ridiculously creepy. Like give-me-nightmares creepy.

Reminds me of the Trash Heap from Fraggle Rock.

It looks like a real cat, covered in tar, and then rolled in a tutti frutti melange of tile shards and tchotchkes.

I'm not crazy about this one, but her other animals are absolutely stellar. She lives in my town and has them in her yard and they're so beautiful and colorful. She uses a variety of materials to create a variety of other animals. Here is her website if you're so inclined:

Funny, I was coming to post almost exactly what JetKat posted. While the cat doesn't appeal to me, I love her other animals. The dogs outside her studio (I also live in her hometown) are fantastic. They also speak to my four year old niece. During an unexpected wait near the studio, we held an extended game of I Spy based on all the elements in one of her dog sculptures. We could probably have spent hours. I love art that speaks to a child as well as an adult.

This is very weird and creepy. Especially the missing face. Something about the large cat being made out of a bunch of small cats is just not working for me.

It puts people ill at ease, and yet I find it very interesting. Dali's melting clocks also put me ill at ease... they're creepy... and I love them. I like this cat.
