How To: Instantly Give Your Photos a Vintage Look

2009-01-vintagephoto.jpg

The year was 1973. Nixon was in the White House, Deep Purple was on the radio, Hawaii Five-O was on the tube, and the mini skirt was all the rage. Man, this photo brings us back - back a few weeks that is. We found a quick (seriously, 2 clicks) way to instantly add vintage charm to your photographs.

Sure, if you're versed in Photoshop or another photo editing program you can add your own vintage effects, but if you're not, you can upload your photo here (the site is in Japanese, but you can change the language to English) and, voila!, it instantly gives your image a vintage look. One caveat is the site seemed to poop out when we tried uploading a very hi-res photo, but if the quality isn't good enough for printing and framing, you could always use it for casual scrapbooking, your blog, crafts, wrapping paper embellishment, etc.

Flickr also has this great application called "piknik" that can do all sorts of things. Vintage look, rounded corners, decorative or cropped borders, fix red-eye, etc. If you click "edit this photo" on an image you've uploaded into Flickr it will take you to piknik. Some of the features require a paid upgrade, but I always just use the ones that are free. It works great! And it's faster than manipulating images separately in Photoshop.

Very cool. Thank you!

I love the look of vintage photos and am a bit of a photoshop dummy.

there is also this program, poladroid, where you drop your photos in, and out pop polaroids. it is based on the 5 cartridge package of polaroids, so every 5 pictures have a different tint to them. and you can also add fake fingerprints!
