Homemade Crayons

2007-03-12-crayons.jpg

Queen of craft Martha Stewart still inspires. While most of her projects require the kind of materials, time and patience that we do not have, her Crazy Crayons idea seems doable.

Remember when you colored your Crayolas down to a nub but still didn't want to throw them out? This project gives those nubs a new life.

The instructions seem easy...

Just chop up crayons into pea-sized pieces. Let your child mix together the cut pieces and combine in to their own special blend. Next, preheat the oven to 150 degrees fahrenheit.

Fill an oven-safe tin (pick different shaped-molds for fun) with the cut pieces and arrange in an interesting design. Bake until the wax just melts (about 15-20 minutes). Let cool, pop out and they're ready to use! You can read more here.

Will try this weekend. Would love to hear from anyone who has done this. I think I could put them in my silicon mini muffin trays? Or maybe the regular big muffin trays would be better?

Ooooh yes - we did this and it worked out great! We used star shaped silicon muffin trays. The star shapes were easy to hold on to and each point could make a clear line. The heart shapes worked out too but were difficult for kids to handle.

The only glitch is that the crayon seemed much harder after re-melting and cooling. The colors no longer glided on the paper. We used them for making images on paper by rubbing crayons on paper over coins, leaves etc.

Unfortunately my photos are not available right now - but I will post some soon.

A great project and I was surprised that the kids liked peeling the crayons as much as using the end product.

My children and I did this with all of the broken bits in their crayon box. I used a mini-muffin tin and it stained the tin. Also, the cheapie crayons don't melt or make as vibrant a color as do Crayolas. Lots of fun for all involved, nonetheless! :)

I know of a mom who made these, along with several other handmade items, for her handsewn treat bags for her child's birthday party. Lovely idea...
