Children's birthday parties are always a test of parents' resources, creativity and many times, their DIY skills. What better way to flex your DIY muscle than by making the birthday cake?

While the baking part may be the easy part, the decoration can be a head scratcher for many. The spring 2007 issue of Adorn gives you clear instructions and tips and how frost and decorate using a piping bag and tips.

To make a swirly flower, they recommend you use a #2D tip and position your bag at a 90 degree angle, holding the tip slightly above the cake.
