Every month we get a little DIY magazine from Lowes, which they also post online, and in the latest edition, a very fun idea that we thought would work nicely in a kid's room - a creative ceiling treatment, using chalkboard paint. Check out the how-to instructions, below.
Lowe's says this is a beginner project, and all you need is black chalkboard paint and a foam paint roller. The wall color in the photo is Matha Stewart Colors, in Pencil Eraser MS009, in case you want to duplicate the wall color as well.
Tape off twelve inches of the ceiling and nine inches of the wall, on either side of your crown molding. Paint between the lines. That's it! The project is on page 10 in the Lowes Creative Ideas mailing.
We think this would also work nicely in a room without molding, and it would be fun to write encouraging and/or seasonal messages to the kids. How big does your nursery have to be to fit the phrase "Get into Harvard Medical School so Mommy Can Retire Young" on the ceiling? Seriously though, would you try this project, or would you look at that black paint and wonder how many coats of primer it would take to cover it up when you decide to redecorate?

Chalkboard paint does come in other colors-green, blue, I think there is even a company that will custom color it.
I saw this in Lowe's mailer and loved it, but I know I'd rarely get up on a ladder to change it out. I once painted stars on a ceiling for a friend's nursery and I swore I'd never paint anything over my head with a small brush ever again. Other tan my laziness issue, I think this is great looking. Maybe do it in regular paint and just leave it alone. Or a chalkboard band around a room where everyone can change it out whenever.

You can make your own chalkboard paint in any color by mixing tile grout into some flat finish paint. See http://tinyurl.com/3bbn2f
