How To: Make Ice Cream in a Bag

2007.06.07.nursery.icecream.jpg

Summer is in full swing! And nothing is more summery than ice cream. But here's the thing: in our tiny apartment, we don't have room for 'one use' appliances, like ice cream makers.

But thanks to the magic of the internet, we have found the recipe for Ice Cream in a Bag, a staple of cottage life when we were kids, and long forgotten until today.

It takes less than 10 minutes, start to finish, and the only equipment you need are 2 ziplock bags...

Recipe from Kidsdomain Crafts:

  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Milk or half & half
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 6 tablespoons Rock salt
  • 1 pint-size Ziploc plastic bag
  • 1 gallon-size Ziploc plastic bag
  • Ice cubes

1. Fill the large bag half full of ice and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.

2. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.

3. Place the small bag inside the large one and seal again carefully.

4. Shake until mixture is ice cream, about 5 minutes.

5. Wipe off top of small bag, then open carefully and enjoy!

Variations:

  • Are you homeschooling? About.com makes Ice Cream in a Bag into a science lesson. Now that is what we call homework!
  • This version uses chocolate milk and only has 3 ingredients!

In this warm weather, this is how we plan to spend our weekend: shaking up ice cream and experimenting with flavors. A little chocolate syrup, a handful of raspberries, some chopped almonds ... it's all good.

the one thing i always hated was that the ice cream always tasted a little salty because if you shake the bag that long, a bit of salt is guaranteed to get inside the small bag.

The "3 ingredient" recipe actually has 4 ... they don't list the rock salt as an ingredient, but they tell you to add it in the directions...

I had an old recipe on the same principle but using a small coffee can inside a very large coffee can and we could roll it on the sidewalk outside awhile (kick the can anyone?) and be making ice cream at the same time !

I made this for a speech demonstration in junior high and again in high school. Always went over very well since everyone got to eat ice cream at the end. I had forgotten about it, but now I'll have to try it with my little girls.
