How To: Make Map Collages

2008_01_30_map collage3.jpg

Do you have old maps piling up? Perhaps they're outdated or maybe you're just not planning a return trip to Sawtooth National Forest anytime soon. Why not recycle them into artwork and let your kids make map collages?

Ask kids to find and trace shapes and patterns in the rivers, roads and borders of maps; cut them out (or older kids can cut their own); let kids paint or color them (or not if they prefer) and assemble them into collages. Voila!

We saw this project on Whipup where you can also find a link to more photos.

Those are gorgeous! What a good idea. I think old National Geographics can be had pretty cheap, and you could use the maps inside.
