There are lots of fun things to do with kids in the kitchen that don't involve cooking or baking. Making colored pasta is a fun activity itself, but what you're left with - brilliantly hued pasta in all shapes and sizes - can be used for kids' crafting, sorting, organizing, counting, as ingredients in play kitchens or anything your (appropriately aged) kids can think up.
Stephanie recently made some rainbow pasta for her son, Creed, and she walks you through the easy process on her blog, Simply Radiant. Moms and Dads should make it themselves for younger ones, but older kids can certainly lend a hand. To increase the variety without having to buy ten kinds of pasta yourself, you could get a few friends to raid their pantries and then get together for a pasta swap!
For my one year old, I dyed pasta and put it into an empty spice jar, glued the top shut, and presto...cute homemade maracas. Or 'shake shakes' as they're known in these parts.

When my mom working daycare, she used to make these in bulk. She got a dozen giant pickle jars and dyed all weekend. But it was sooo worth it!
