How To: Make (Somewhat) Healthier Squiddlies

072109-spaghettidog.jpgDid you catch these bizarre spaghetti dogs when they were making the rounds of the internet a few weeks back? We saw them on our sister site, The Kitchn, and were definitely intrigued. We're not so hot on hot dogs, however, so when we spotted a healthier alternative on Filth Wizardry (our new favorite making-things-with-preschoolers site), we bookmarked it for future kitchen reference. Keep reading to see the revamped version...

072109-spaghettidog-2.jpg072109-spaghettidog-3.jpgLindsey at Filth Wizardry decided to use chunks of carrots and ham in lieu of hot dogs, with great results. Not only did the Squiddlies (her name for this dish) turn out great, it kept her kids busy for a good quarter of an hour:

They really enjoyed skewering the dried spaghetti through things and it kept them quiet for a good fifteen minutes. If I'd let them and we had the resources then I think they would have been happy to make enough of these to feed the whole city.

See Lindsey's post, along with more photos and a LOT of other wonderful craft ideas, at Filth Wizardry.

I'm still a fan of the turkey dogs with spaghetti we did, even though we got a lot of "ew"s when we did it. The old classic version, even if the kids were a bit freaked out by it. :D

We tried these out several weeks ago. Super fun to make and a major hit with the kid!

They were fun to make but my kids wouldn't eat them. I think I'll try them with carrots, though!

You can certainly make 'healthy' versions of this easy-peasy. I think these are funny, whimsical, and awesome foodtainment for little kids.

What about vegetarian hot dogs? Kids love those.
