How To: Murals With A Little Help From Technology

When Jason and Kim were readying their nursery, they wanted to stick to something gender neutral. Finding their bedding first and loving its rich earth tones, they decided to try their hand at adorning the walls with the same animals on their fabric. After photographing them they were projected onto the wall. This way for results?

To start Jason and Kim busted out the laser level and blue painter's tape. They put down the green stripe and then set to work tracing the animals with pencil and then painting them with acrylic paint. Afterward, they went back and did detailing with a Sharpie (really is there anything they can't do?).

Jason had this to tell us about the process and using his laptop as a help:

"We took a picture of each animal and then loaded them onto the laptop. The pictures were then viewed full screen. With a regular computer monitor cable (VGA) we hooked it up to a video projector. Any kind will work from an in-home movie projector to a regular conference room projector. The initial scale of each animal was a little different and was corrected by adjusting the distance of the projected image. It works best if there are two people. One to adjust the projector focus and the other to trace."

The end result is perfect for their son and is a job well done!
Thanks Kim and Jason!

They totally stole my idea! We just did the same thing in my daughter's room and it came out GREAT. Note to anyone who is planning on trying it, use caution with the medium used to transfer the image to the wall -- we used a charcoal pencil and the paint mixed with the pencil when we painted over it. It was kind of a mess. Chalk worked really well, though. We couldn't use a pencil as we have textured walls.
