How To: Two Mushroom Tutorials from The Purl Bee

A mushroom walks into a bar...The folks at The Purl Bee blog have been celebrating the humble fungus with two mushroom tutorials, including a baby rattle. Alas, we don't knit (sigh...), but we know many of you do and these are too lovely not to share.

These knitted baby rattles make the perfect quick project for your own baby or to give as a gift. Get creative with your color combinations or add stripes, dots or other patterns to make them either realistic or fantastical. Materials for the project include small amounts of yarn, stuffing and a cat toy which encloses a bell. As always, the women at Purl have included thorough instructions and copious photographs of the process.

The origin of the mushrooms above is the blog Kathryn Ivy the creation of two knitting sisters, Alice and Grace Schnebly, who generously share their mushroom patterns and process. The mushroom caps and stems are first knitted and then felted to give them a more realistic look. Above is one interpretation of the project by the Purl Bee women. The mushrooms can be simply displayed, made into hanging ornaments or we think they'd made fine teethers.
