We weren't at all surprised to see that this useful tutorial for covering those mundane, at best, and ugly, at worst, plastic crates comes from Laura who shared her son and daughter's beautiful room with us awhile back.

You might have some of these crates still kicking around from college or else they're very inexpensive to buy from big box stores like Kmart or Target. Her tutorial shows you how to sew a lined cover for them (shown here in prints from her sister-in-law's gorgeous fabric line) which she's using to store fabric, but we think would make great toy or book boxes.
You can find the tutorial here at her excellent blog, Paint In My Hair, (where, incidentally, she's selling calendars with her lovely artwork.)
That's just lovely! I've had a similar project on the back burner for a while - I want to slipcover the laundry basket that I'm currently using to corral random toys in the boy's room. It's a perfect toy box solution for a toddler, it's just really unattractive. This may inspire me to finally do it!

I am doing this, but instead of crates I am using my baby wipes boxes! I have them sitting around here anyways, and they are a perfect size!

This is fantastic! I'm picturing a house full of them right now.
