Inspiration: Decorating With Kids' Road Rugs

2009-04-15-roadrug.jpg

We've all seen the road rugs available in the stores - lots of garish colors that look difficult to incorporate into the decor. Yesterday we spotted this beautiful bedroom (at Design Sponge) and, at first, didn't even notice that the floor covering is actually a road rug.

2009-04-15-playmat.jpgOn closer inspection, we realized that It's the Lekplats play mat from IKEA. But it works so well in this calming white room. The accent pillows on the bed reference the yellows and greens in the rug. We also love the dollop of turquoise from the leather ottoman to add further color. There is nothing tacky about the way this road rug was incorporated. Maybe we'll have to pick one up next time we make an IKEA run.

This rug is the Keep Calm and Carry On poster of kids rooms of late. I keep seeing it EVERYWHERE--including my son's old room. =D

We actually got rid of ours--it off-gassed like crazy and I didn't think that was too safe with an infant in the house.

We have this rug in our son's playroom. Normally, I am not a fan of road rugs, but the muted whimsy of this one changed my view. When IKEA is good, it's actually downright brilliant!

We used to have it too. I loved the orange & gray.

We love this rug - just got it (along with some lillabo trains) for our son. It's reasonably priced, too.
