The advent calendar officially comes out of storage today. Like many of you, we struggle year to year coming up with fun things to tuck into our advent calendar. Many of you really enjoyed the list of activities we told you about. Here's another fantastic idea for your family.
Why not create a book-themed advent calendar? We saw this over at Babyccino and love it. Gather 24 holiday books, wrap each one and mark for each day. Then let the kids unwrap a book each night for bedtime. If you don't have 24 holiday books, just gather what you do have and mix them among your list of holiday activities to enjoy. We love this idea.

I did exactly that for my 3.5 year old son! With books from the thrift store for $1-$2 each. Some are christmas themed, the others we will enjoy all year long.

we do this, but don't label them. the kids like to take their time picking out which book looks JUST right for each night. also, as we've slowly built up our collection (thrift stores, clearance racks), we've supplemented with library books. you can also just do the twelve days of christmas instead of all 24.

We do this too! We have them all wrapped and in a basket, and then the kids pick one out each night. They love it!

Yeah! Brilliant! I smell a budding family tradition!

For an even greener version of this - why not wrap up some of the books sitting around the house not being read? This would allow your family to get excited about them and "discover" them on their own.

Will definitely do this with holiday books we have collected over the years! Thank you- I was looking for a cool advent calendar idea.

@ makakona: The twelve days of Christmas are not the same as advent. The twelve days begin on 12/25 and continue through three kings day on or about 1/6.

I LOVE this idea! Thanks for the tip. We'll be picking out new books from the thrift store this morning.
